RE: Adding BBC HLS to radio.
I've found it,I take it that if I change anything it won't affect my main system?

Thanks for this. Any changes that you make will affect your main system, so I suggest you don't make any changes until I have been able to consider options for what might be possible for your Roberts radio.

Thanks very much for your reply.I’m beginning to wonder if it’s all really worth the bother.I’ve got everything working well at the moment and I don’t want to take up more of your valuable time.

RE: Adding BBC HLS to radio.
I have been trying to find a simple solution that will do what you want on the Roberts radio without changing what is happening on your main system. Unfortunately I not been able to find such a solution.

I think the right solution would be to add support in a future version of MinimServer for a browsing option that would allow you to choose between different transcoding settings for the same stream. In your case, you would choose L16 transcoding when browsing and playing from your Roberts radio.

I would also like to make this possible for other configuration settings by making use of profiles, so that you could have a Roberts profile with L16 transcoding and a Main profile for your main system with whatever transcoding settings it uses currently. When browsing and playing music on the Roberts, you could select the Roberts profile and when browsing and playing music on your main system, you could select the Main profile.

I have noted this as a feature request. It is quite a bit of work and there might be difficulties with implementing it that I don't foresee at present. I think it would be worth doing because it would have other benefits for many users.

I will post back here if this becomes available in a future version of MinimServer.

Simon,

I think I have understood the contents of this thread. One of the things I have always wanted (and asked for) is the ability to have different transcoding settings for each device. So maybe my Linn system could have 'full fat' FLAC whereas a Sonos device may be sent FLAC 'light'. It sounds like what you are proposing for this situation is at least related to my request. If you are doing some work in this area could you consider including my request?

Thanks
Dave

RE: Adding BBC HLS to radio.
You are correct that this would enable you and other users with a similar requirement to do what you want. The selection of transcoding settings would be made by the user while browsing in the control point. It cannot be automatic because the UPnP protocol requires the server to know the transcoding settings for a file or stream before it knows which renderer will be used for playing the file or stream.

In practice, this shouldn't be too inconvenient because the user would normally select a renderer profile, play a few tracks on that renderer, then select another renderer profile before starting to play tracks on the other renderer.

RE: Adding BBC HLS to radio.
My knowledge of UPnP is.....nil. So take this as a comment from a numpty. It makes perfect sense to ME to have an option as part of the stream.transcode property to assign a transcode setting to a device (identified by ip address?). Are you saying this is not possible with UPnP?
I am sure that you will come up with best possible method so I am grateful that the last missing piece of minimserver will be filled.
Bring it on!

RE: Adding BBC HLS to radio.
It is not possible to do as you suggest because browsing is done by the control point, not the renderer. This means the IP address of the renderer is not available at the time MinimServer receives the browse request and responds to it with the stream details.
