RE: New installation teething problems
Have you checked the MinimServer log for error messages?
Does restarting the renderers or rebooting the OpenSUSE machine running MinimServer solve the problem? Based on my poor experiences with OpenSUSE running MinimServer, I suspect it might not be possible to make this combination work reliably. |

RE: New installation teething problems
Hi Simon,
I understand your concerns over openSUSE but there has not been a problem in all the years I have used minimserver. The only issue remains a technical security problem with minimwatch. All the systems involved have been re-booted more times than I can count and all the devices have been updated and upgraded. This may of course be the source of the problem and the question is where to look. I have the same problem symptom both with my RPi homebrew and a Linn device I am just trying to think through the various processes. My control point can scan and detect both renderers and the control point can also see and I can browse the music data files and directories. It is only the enqueue instruction which fails and I am wondering if it could be a firewall problem between the renderers and the server. We have mentioned upnp protocol in the past. Is this required for these handshakes I ask? It is not mentioned explicitly for minimserver but for BubbleDS? I have saved a debug log to a file which should be attached and may help illuminate something ctually a couple of logs from different dates as I had to zip to get them attached here. alastair.zip (Size: 61.32 KB / Downloads: 1)
Just a thought. If you have any suggestions please let me know, Regards and thanks again for your replies. Alastair. |

If you can grep for something you know should be in the log, only you will know what. The only thing that bothers me is that there have been changes in the repo structure and content for the multimedia. These had been kept out of the main repo sites and included in the Packman repo because of possible license infringements but some of these licenses have lapsed and now have been re-included in the default distro. It is quite possible I have inadvertently missed some of the required multimedia tools. Not at machine now but will check again in the morning. Regards, A. |

RE: New installation teething problems
Hi Simon,
Still trying to sort this out. There is one section in your instructions I recall which suggests that if my firewall is set to public (for Windoze) I will have problems so it should be set to home, work or private. Your trouble shooting notes suggest I try turning off the firewall and that I should turn off inbound connctions to minimserver. Can you be more explicit regarding which ports and protocols I should enable in both directions? My quick and dirty attempt at trouble shooting by installing on a windoze machine seems to work so I am starting to examine the communication between minimserver and the rest of my lan to try and find where the problem lies. |

RE: New installation teething problems
Port 1900 (UDP) needs to be open for inbound and outbound. Ports 9790 and 9791 (TCP) need to be open for inbound. All ports (TCP) need to be open for outbound.

Please can you suggest what I set in minimserver logging and what to try as I still the green icon in my system tray so still have some control. I can upload the logs as before. Many thanks, Regards, Alastair. |

Simon, I went to your notes on multicast issues and turned everything off and then on in the suggested order. This time I was able to enqueue an album and try and play on the Linn Majik. Unfortunately no sound and the chosen track jumped one track to another in no particular order. Very erratic and eventually I turned off the Linn. A small step forward perhaps but how do I make further progress please? Should I start a new thread? I followed your advice once more and by some miracle playing is now as it should be. Very relieved and thanks for the hand holding earlier. My faith has been restored. Regards and thanks again, Alastair |

RE: New installation teething problems
As I said in an earlier post, I am seeing unexpected errors when running MinimServer on OpenSUSE. Your experience confirms that this combination is unreliable. As the enqueue problem is not consistently reproducible (just like the OpenSUSE problems I saw myself), I am unable to investigate or suggest a cause. I can only suggest that you use a different Linux distribution such as Ubuntu or Debian, both of which have worked reliably with MinimServer in all my testing over many years.

Hi Simon, your notes and persistence won the day. It has been impossible for me to reproduce my problems here as every attempt yields a different result. The problem has probably been caused by having to route through a series of no less than three managed switches pending some more hardware and cabling improvements. I would never go to Ubuntu but did have a backup machine running Debian as the most reliable and solid option. This is presently the machine I have just upgraded and is temporarily standing in as my main machine, having to run minmserver on openSUSE Leap 15.3 while my main machine and my older NAS gets their hardware upgrades. I still have faith in openSUSE but less in KDE. Only one day lost here and I am sorry I wasted a good deal of your time but at least the outcome has been good and I am most thankful, as ever, for your help and brilliant programme. Regards, Alastair. |
