New installation teething problems
I have just migrated my database from old server NAS to new server and tried to maintain all the original settings for minimserver, bubbleds and easytag, the three important apps I use for music.

Mostly now up an running although there are a few orphans to be put into their right home, for example my cd rips of my Cohen collection started back in the day with rips to mp3. Later I was able to change to flac. There are at least 20 albums in the collection.

When using bubbleds control point and looking in Genre>Leonard Cohen only 3 albums were identified. None of the mp3 albums appeared although of course they are all there in the database.

What have I missed which used to work and is now is not set correctly please?

I ask here first but it may of course be a BubbleDS problem.

Regards,
Budge.

RE: New installation teething problems
Have you done a MinimServer rescan after adding the MP3 albums?

Hi Simon,
Yes, several times. If I use [folder view]>Folk>Leonard Cohen> all the albums are present but using the normal filtered view; Genre>Folk>Artist>Leonard Cohen I only get "3 albums."
Not sure where to look next.

RE: New installation teething problems
It sounds like either your MP3 albums are not tagged with Genre=Folk or they are not tagged with Artist=Leonard Cohen.

To check this, try selecting Artist>Leonard Cohen from the top-level menu. If this shows the albums, they are not tagged with Genre=Folk. If this does not show the albums, they are not tagged with Artist=Leonard Cohen.

Not quite sure I follow but from top level menu Artist>Leonard Cohen all 20 albums are shown but when I look at the metadata they are shown as Genre (80)???
If I go to top level Genre> I have all the genre listed but also at the top of the column and before Ambient I have (17), (80), and (186). There are a few other artists which seem to be involved so will check the titles.

Almost certainly munged during the transfer of data but it was nearly 5TB of data over many hours so not surprised.

Bottom line is that using Easytag all the tagging looks OK. Will check again and report what I find. Very strange. More worrying is the rest of the data which is not so easily checked!

Thanks again,
Alastair

OK, I do have a problem. My data are saved, for historical reasons in subdirectories by Genre and Artist so I have ~/multimedia/Music/Rock/Bob Dylan/...There are only 6 albums here and all have been correctly tagged with Bob Dylan as the Artist and Rock as the genre according to EasyTag.

Using control app, if I search from top directory >Artist>Bob Dylan I have all 6 albums but if I search from the top>Genre>Rock>Artist there is no Bob Dylan. There is Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and all the gang but no Bob Dylan.

Using [folder view] Bob Dylan is where he should be.

I have rescanned everything so I am looking for more clues.

RE: New installation teething problems
It sounds like these problems are caused by Genre not being tagged correctly in some of your files. Your test with the Genre index confirms this. You should not be seeing Genre index entries like (17), (80), and (186). If your tagging were correct, these index entries would be shown as Rock, Folk and Podcast.

This is likely to be caused by a mismatch between what EasyTag is writing to your files and what MinimServer is expecting based on the ID3v2 specifications.

Are the files that have this issue tagged using the ID3v2.3 format or the ID3v2.4 format? Your tagging program should tell you which of these formats the files are using.

My new installation is set for ID3v2.4. Is that the problem? Seems that is it. Why is this I ask?

RE: New installation teething problems
The format for Genre (TCON frame) changed between ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4. For example, Rock is '(17)' in ID3v2.3 and '17' in ID3v2.4 (no parentheses).

Your tagging program should have made the necessary changes when it converted the tags from ID3v2.3 to ID3v2.4 but it seems it is incorrectly using the ID3v2.3 Genre format in ID3v2.4 tags.

For various reasons, ID3v2.4 is better than ID3v2.3 so I don't recommend going back to ID3v2.3. Can you use a different tagging program to do a correct conversion from ID3v2.3 to ID3v2.4?

Alternatively, you could fix this by doing a bulk replacement of '(17)' with '17' etc. in all your ID3v2.4 files if your tagging program provides this capability.

Hi Simon and many thanks for clear and helpful advice. As I recall I had some tagging problems when the data was in another machine. AFAIK I have used Easytag for several years now and had it set for id3v2.4 but either an earlier version of Easytag or possibly puddletag might have caused the problem. You have now given me all the info I need to investigate so many thanks once again.
Regards,
Budge.
