problem with Synology DS1512+ DSM4.2
I'm trying to install MinimServer 0.70 on a brand new Synology 1512+ with DSM 4.2 out of the box.
I guess my problem is not exactly with MinimServer! My problem is with Java on Synology. Synology 1512+ uses a intel atom CPU so I go to Oracle to get the Java file: ejre-1_6_0_38-fcs-b05-linux-i586-headless-13_nov_2012.tar.gz (took me a while to figure out Java 7 does not work on a Synology, only Java 6 is ok!) Create a public folder on Synology (make public folder read/write-able to everyone etc), put the ejre-1_6_0_38-fcs-b05-linux-i586-headless-13_nov_2012.tar.gz file under public folder According to insturction, I added this URL: http://packages.pcloadletter.co.uk in Settings -> Package Sources->package repository Then I guess I should see a "Java install" or something under the list of installable items. There is indeed a "Java Manager" in the list of items, but I finally figure out that is NOT from the package repository I added! That "Java Manager" is a buildin item of the DSM4.2 system! As you can see from my screen capture, I'm NOT see any item from the http://packages.pcloadletter.co.uk package repository link. So in the end I tried using the buildin "Java Manager" to install Java. After some download and install message, the screen shows Java is installed and running. So I tried install MinimServer 0.70, and of course MinimServer installer said Java is NOT installed. Besides, there is another location that seems to indicated the buildin "Java Manager" said Java is not installed! My problems are: - I'm NOT seeing the items from http://packages.pcloadletter.co.uk - in 1 dialog box it shows Java is installed with the buildin "Java Manager" but another dialog box show Java is NOT installed! So which is which? - MinimServer won't install complaining Java is not installed! The whole process made me goes in a circle many many times! I don't know what am I missing! Please help! Thanks! |

The message about a missing Java installation from the 7th screenshot when installing MinimServer will appear when one or both of the following conditions apply: 1) The $JAVA_HOME environment variable is not set 2) The file $JAVA_HOME/bin/java is not available. Quote:Synology 1512+ uses a intel atom CPU so I go to Oracle to get the Java file: The public shared folder /volume1/public should already be there. You shouldn't have to create it yourself. For Marvell Kirkwood and 2013 PowerPC models, Java 6 and Java 7 is available, for x86 models only Java 6 is available. Quote:According to insturction, I added this URL: With this setting, the packages by patters should appear in the package center under both the 'All' tab and the 'Community' tab. Besides the Java package which is named 'Java SE for Embedded 6', there should also appear e.g. the Serviio package and others. Did you try refreshing the package center after applying this setting? Quote:There is indeed a "Java Manager" in the list of items, but I finally figure out that is NOT from the package repository I added! That "Java Manager" is a buildin item of the DSM4.2 system! The Synology Java Manager is an official Java package from Synology available since DSM 4.2 for x86 devices only. Quote:My problems are: This is indeed weird. As stated above, try refreshing the package center. If this doesn't help, I suggest to refer to http://pcloadletter.co.uk/ for further help. Quote:- in 1 dialog box it shows Java is installed with the buildin "Java Manager" but another dialog box show Java is NOT installed! So which is which? The section of the first image showing that Java is installed is actually not a dialog box but a screenshot preview of how it could look like after a successful Java installation with the 'Java Manager'. The third screenshot suggests that the Synology Java manager awaits a *.bin file. As I don't own a x86 Synology NAS, I can't be of much help concerning the 'Java Manager'. I suggest to contact the Synology support for further help. Quote:- MinimServer won't install complaining Java is not installed! If you manage to install Java properly either with the 'Java Manager' or with the Java package by patters, the MinimServer installation will succeed. |

RE: problem with Synology DS1512+ DSM4.2
Thanks winxi!
So far I tried 2 Synology, 1 small 1 bay model (112 I think), and this 5 bays model. In both cases no public folder by default, I need to manually create the public folder. I tried power cycle the Synology but still no additional packages from that URL shown. About the buildin Java install screen, it say a bin file is needed. I have no idea what that is! The file I got from Oracle is ejre-1_6_0_38-fcs-b05-linux-i586-headless-13_nov_2012.tar.gz Damn, these things are not easy!

Use this file for the Java installation with the Synology Java Manager. Quote:Damn, these things are not easy! The amount of different Java downloads may sometimes seem confusing. Unfortunately, Oracle does not allow distributing Java. So this can not be changed. |

RE: problem with Synology DS1512+ DSM4.2
Many thanks winxi!
How can you figure out this is the "bin" file to use? I tried google search on Synology Java bin etc but couldn't find any solution! Will try and report!

There is also a button 'Choose file' which I guess will open a file chooser dialog to select this bin-file. I suggest to try this button .

RE: problem with Synology DS1512+ DSM4.2
Indeed youSynology dialog box has instruction to get the .bin file! But I was too fixed on getting those package from that URL to show! And since I already downloaded that .tar Java file manually, I missed needing another file!
Anyway, I got the Java installed using the buildin Java Manager. (I need to manually remove the .sh file extension as the .bin file download automatically becomes a .bin.sh file!) After MinimServer scanned the Synology for around 20mins (I think), MinimWatch became Red, with a error: MinimServer[DiskStation]: exceeded limit of 65000 folders The Synology DS1512+ has 5 3TB HDDs in a RAID5 setup, with a usable space of around 11TB. Around 5TB is used for music and 6TB space available. Need to find more solution... |

Quote:After MinimServer scanned the Synology for around 20mins (I think), MinimWatch became Red, with a error: I think that it is an inherent limitation of MinimServer to allow for no more than 65000 subfolders under the content directories. That you got this message is probably related to the fact that the Synology indexing service creates a dedicated folder for each music file with embedded album art. How many files and directories does your library approximately contain? |
