Tagging for Two or More Genres
I am using minimserver on NAS and BubbleDS on android as control point with Linn DS devices as renderers. I have a collection of classical recordings and when tagging I use genres such as Liturgical, Early, Opera etc. Often a piece falls into more than one genre and I want to find it under all which are tagged. I understand that minimserver can handle multiple genres but have never found a way to make this work. How should I enter tag for a track which is both early and liturgical if for example I want to find it when searching under either early or liturgical?

I use either EasyTAG or Puddletag. I preferred EasyTAG but ran into difficulty with .mp4 files so switched to Puddletag a while ago, which has similar functionality to Mp3Tag. Still have many hundreds of files to improve tags and will use whichever you recommend although it would be good if I could continue to use either with respect to genre tagging. BTW in returning here I took chance to read up a bit on tagging and things have moved on it seems. I shall post separately to ask how best to deal with operas spreading over 2 or 3 CDs. At present I re-number tracks by hand when tagging and put all tracks into one directory as the split between CDs is not relevant. This is also because I sometimes browse by folder rather than using filters and I have been ignorant on the capabilities of your software wrt multi Cds. More reading to do before I ask for help but if you could tell me where to start reading I would much appreciate it. Regards, Budgie |

RE: Tagging for Two or More Genres
In Mp3tag, you can use \\ as a separator for multiple values. This might work in puddletag as well. For example, you could try tagging a track as Early\\Liturgical and see whether puddletag puts both Early and Liturgical in the file.

Hi Simon, Last time I tried \\ as delimiter I ended up with a new genre "Liturgical\\Early" displayed in my CP and the disk in it did not appear under Liturgical or Early. The same was true using a comma delimiter. What I seek, for the avoidance of doubt, is that with two genre tags the disk should appear in both genres, not in a new genre as illustrated above. I do not understand enough unaided but wondered if I might look at the actual metadata. What does minimserver require to show one disk in two genres? I am going to do a few more trials but if you have any suggestions meanwhile please advise. BTW when ripping (Audex) I am offered a Track Offset setting. This seems to default to 1 but what is this please? Regards, Budgie |

RE: Tagging for Two or More Genres
If the \\ delimiter is not working in puddletag, you will need to ask the author of puddletag how to tag two different genres in the same file. You will know you have succeeded if MinimServer shows the track in two different genre categories.
You can look at actual metadata with a hex editor but this requires some understanding of how the metadata is represented in the file format. I am unable to answer your question about track offset when ripping. |

The \\ delimiter worked with current Puddletag version so progress is being made. No idea why I couldn't get it working before but no need for hex editor just now!!! I have been reading to get up to date on tagging classical music and am interested in "group" and best way to tag multi cd set. Before I start posting more questions please could you advise what I should read to understand better this concept. Thanks again, Regards, Budgie |

To understand how MinimServer handles the Group tag and supports multidisc albums, it would be worth reading the MinimServer user guide. |

Almost spoilt for choice and must now think hard about how I want to use it all. Meanwhile I have been slogging through backlog of tagging and uploaded a directory of files with edited and corrected file names. I re-scanned using mimimwatch but now have a bunch of "Modified or deleted item" entries in my folder view. I assume left in the cache. Will flush and check. Regards, Budgie |

RE: Tagging for Two or More Genres
The "Modified or deleted item" entries mean you need to do a MinimServer rescan because you have modified or deleted some files since the last time you did a rescan.
