Matching for multi-disc albums
Hi,

I have trouble understanding exactly how the matching works for multi-disc albums. I have a 17 disc box and while most of them are matched, a few show up as separate entries. I made sure the title is the same, they have discnumber-tags and there's not albumartist. How do I debug this?

Thanks!
Koen

If the discs don't have AlbumArtist tags, the matching will be done by title and Artist tag(s). If the discs aren't all matching, there must be some difference in the Artist tag(s) of some of the discs. You can solve this by adding an AlbumArtist tag to all discs.

RE: Matching for multi-disc albums
Thanks for the quick response! There are certainly different artist tags, although they all share one artist (it's a set of all EMI Oistrakh recordings). I am surprised that most of the discs are matched, even though they contain different artist tags as well.

I added the AlbumArtist tag, which resulted in all discs being combined. But, I now no longer see the '>> Disc x' subdivision in my CP (BubbleUPnP). Just to be sure, I removed the AlbumArtist tags, which made the disc-divisions visible again.

Any idea what's causing this behavior?

I'm not sure why adding and removing AlbumArtist tags would cause this difference. Have you checked the MinimServer log for warning or error messages?

To get these divisions, you need to tag the discs with

Album Name (Disc 1) or Album Name [Disc 1]
Album Name (Disc 2) or Album Name [Disc 2]
etc.

instead of tagging all the discs with Album Name.

RE: Matching for multi-disc albums
Ah, I see. I have the discnumber tags, but not the suffix on the album - I guess that explains it. I just checked the documentation, and it indeed mentions this. I probably missed that because it worked 'magically' when no albumartist-tags were given. If there's anything I can do to find out what happened, let me know.

Thanks for the support!

Is each disc in a separate folder or do you have more than one disc in the same folder?

In this case, the discs are in separate folders.

Thanks! I will set up a test to see if I can reproduce this.

I think I understand this. The discs are only merged into a single album without divisions if the disc numbers are all consecutive starting at 1. If there are any discs missing because they weren't recognized as being part of the same album, the discs won't be merged and you will get the divisions between them.

RE: Matching for multi-disc albums
I see; that is some implementation detail that I was not aware of.

Not trying to question your design choices, but from an end-user point of view, I do not really like to have to add [Disc x] to all album tags. All discs come from the same album, and it therefore feels more natural to give them the same name. It also makes it easier to ensure that they have the same name, because the tagging software shows the same album tag, rather than some indication that it's different for all tracks.
