I have a Synology 213 and I can't hear the fan (when it's running) until my ear is about a foot from it; even then it's a very quiet whoosh sound (the fan run fairly slowly, I think). I also use Western Digital Red drives and have never heard a peep from either one even though they are a 3.5" design.
I would avoid the Synology "j" models, which are their low-end machines. My first purchase was a DS112j, which worked well mechanically but did not have enough processor and memory capacity to transcode high-res files. The DS213 is great. David |
