Minim for fanless NAS - rokalf - 02-07-2013 20:16
Hi Simon,
I installed Minim on my QNAP and would like to use Minim in a future set-up. This new Setup does not include QNAP, Synology or Netgear as none of them can give me a fanless NAS. I must have the NAS near to the Music Server and the QNAP ist too loud.
Do you have any plans to make Minim available on WD MyBook and/or Seagate Goflex? These are the only fanless NAS I could find.
Any other NAS suggestions from you or the Forum?
The only other alternative is an expensive HFX AssetNAS, but I'd rather spend the Euros on the Music Server.

I understand your requirement for a fanless NAS. I have a QNAP TS-119 which I bought used on eBay, and I'm very pleased with it. They come up for sale from time to time.
Another option is the new Synology DS-213j. This is not fanless, but it has a very low noise level of 17 dB(A). According to this article:
The DS213j has the same white chassis we've seen on the entry-level NAS, but has a faster 1.2 GHz Marvell ARM controller with 512 MB of RAM. Synology has really tried to make this a quiet NAS, with a more silent rubber-mounted fan and rubber feet for the disks.
I'm not planning to make a MinimServer package for either the WD My Book Live or Seagate GoFlex, mainly because these don't support installable third-party packages.

me is using a TonidoPlug2 and Java is running on this one. Minimserver is not yet installed, but should work as well. I have installed ArchLinux ARM on it, which seems to be available for the GoFlex as well (http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5/seagate-goflex-home.).

If you are comfortable with setting up Linux, there are many options for running a plug computer as a fanless NAS with MinimServer. I have done this successfully with a SheevaPlug, a MiraBox and a Raspberry Pi.

Trank you both for some interesting alternatives. I am not realy comfortable with Linux, but maybe I can find Simone who is. It would Five me the opportunity to have a high end Equipment look-alike. Of not I max go for the synology. Is the 1-bay equally silent? A Music only NAS does't Need Raid. The Content is rather stable After some time. I make two copies, one not in the house! Much safer zehn any Type of Raid. By the Way the link to archlinux doesn't work for me.

The DS112j has a noise level of 17.1 dB(A), which is similar. However, this is an older model with a slower processor and smaller RAM size. If you want to use a single disk, I think it would be better to buy a DS213j and populate it with a single disk.
There is also a rumour that a new single-bay DS114 model will be announced soon (see this thread).

Hi, I've a Synology DS211 and with respect to the fan my subjective impression is that it is really quiet.
From my experience, the HDDs are much more significant to the noise level than the fan. If you've a requirement for a really quiet music server, you may consider using SSDs instead of HDDs.

Another option is to use 2.5 inch HDDs. These can be significantly quieter than 3.5 inch HDDs. The single-platter 2.5 inch models from manufacturers such as WD and Hitachi are extremely quiet.

I have a Synology 213 and I can't hear the fan (when it's running) until my ear is about a foot from it; even then it's a very quiet whoosh sound (the fan run fairly slowly, I think). I also use Western Digital Red drives and have never heard a peep from either one even though they are a 3.5" design.
I would avoid the Synology "j" models, which are their low-end machines. My first purchase was a DS112j, which worked well mechanically but did not have enough processor and memory capacity to transcode high-res files. The DS213 is great.

It's usually not the fan you hear (at least not with my DS 211+), but rather the disks spinning. So go for really quiet disks...
