RE: GETTING STARTED

It seemed that as long as Mac was present it also always found it on Qnap also. Not sure what that means. Without Mac attached Qnap is finding it most of time but on occasion still comes up empty after sleeping This is interesting and it gives me a slight clue. Is the QNAP attached to the switch? If so, please try the experiment again with the Mac attached to the router by hard wired Ethernet. |

RE: GETTING STARTED
Yes the ND5X and the Qnap are wired to the switch. I will give it a try with the Mac wired to the router.

RE: GETTING STARTED
So I wired the Mac directly to the router this time. I found if I put the iPad to sleep and opened again quickly, it always found the Mac but would often not find the Qnap. I would have to swipe the program closed for it to find the NAS again.

Thanks for doing these tests. I don't yet have a full explanation for the test results but it seems the problem might be related to multicast connectivity between the router and the switch. If the Mac is attached to the switch, the multicast messages sent from the Mac via the switch to the router are keeping the multicast connection alive. For some reason, this doesn't happen when only the QNAP and ND5X are connected to the switch. This doesn't explain why things are not working when the switch is eliminated. Does the QNAP have a VPN running? This can cause strange problems with MinimServer discovery. It would be worth trying setting the MinimServer ohnet.subnet property as described in this section. After doing this, reboot the QNAP. This would be the solution if you have a VPN running. |

RE: GETTING STARTED
I am not sure if I have a vpn running or not. Certainly not on purpose. I do have Minimwarxh running on the Mac not the Qnap. I will try to make sense of the link you sent. Do I really need the switch? I was told initially by someone that having everything tied into the router was my problem.

Because of the unsolved mystery about what's causing the problem, I can't say whether you need the switch. It seems to be slightly helpful in that attaching the Mac to the switch improves the discovery situation with the QNAP. You can check for a VPN from the QNAP control panel by clicking VPN Server under Applications. |

RE: GETTING STARTED
There is one more test you could try. If you remove the switch and attach the Mac, QNAP and ND5X to the router, does discovery of the QNAP work OK?

RE: GETTING STARTED
What is the relationship between having Minimwatch on the Mac and Minimserver on the Qnap?
