RE: Would a "wav32" Output Type Be Possible? - simoncn - 21-04-2020 07:29 Let me tell you a story. A long time ago, in a forum far away, someone claimed that converting 16-bit files to 24-bit by adding trailing zeros to the 16 bits of audio data improved the sound. This made no logical sense but I respected the person claiming this so I tried it myself and found the same results. As a result, MinimStreamer allows 16-bit files to be transcoded to 24-bit (by adding zeros) and many people have reported that this improves the sound on their system. One theory is that the DAC is processing the signal as 24 bits and doing this padding at the server end takes a bit of processing load off the renderer. If this theory is correct, the same might be true for 32-bit DACs (note bold text). The only way to find out is to try it. RE: Would a "wav32" Output Type Be Possible? - GreenMtnGringo - 21-04-2020 16:21 Hi Simon. I agree that transcoding 16-bit FLAC to 24-bit WAV in MinimServer[2] results in a material benefit to sonics. I look forward to trying the "wav32" output type, if and when it becomes available. Thanks. RE: Would a "wav32" Output Type Be Possible? - GreenMtnGringo - 17-07-2021 17:03 Hi Simon, just checking in to see if transcoding to wav32 is still a future possibility. Thanks very much. RE: Would a "wav32" Output Type Be Possible? - simoncn - 19-07-2021 10:37 Thanks for the gentle reminder. I am working on this now. RE: Would a "wav32" Output Type Be Possible? - GreenMtnGringo - 19-07-2021 15:39 Hi Simon, okay great, thanks very much. I thought it was the job of ffmpeg to do those conversions, not of minimserver (apart from sending the command, plus the parameters such as convOut) ??? RE: Would a "wav32" Output Type Be Possible? - simoncn - 25-07-2021 22:00 For FLAC, there is an internal converter to WAV as well as the option to use FFmpeg. Also, even when using FFmpeg, you need to be able to enter wav32 as the output type in stream.transcode. |
