Using JPLAY with MinimServer

JPLAY syncs your MinimServer library into its own index on the device, so browsing and searching stay fast even with 100,000+ tracks. There’s also a folder view that follows your folder structure.
After adding music or changing tags or artwork, run Rescan in MinimServer, then Sync in JPLAY. (Rescan can be triggered from JPLAY app too)

Gapless playback works on renderers that support it, and you can set it per renderer.

UPnP implementations vary, so we work with manufacturers on compatibility. JPLAY is tested with their streamers and DACs, we fix what needs fixing. The list includes dCS, MSB Technology, Weiss, Bricasti, Totaldac, Esoteric, TEAC, Nagra, Grimm Audio, Lumin, Hegel, Ayre, Primare, aqua acoustic quality and others. The certified models are listed at jplay.app/partner-program. If your renderer isn’t there, it will most likely still work, and if it doesn’t, please tell me.

The reason I'm posting here specifically: this forum has the most metadata-serious UPnP users anywhere, and metadata is exactly where UPnP clients earn or lose their keep. DIDL varies between servers far more than the spec suggests, and the awkward cases are where it shows — classical works and movements, multi-disc sets, compilations, very large libraries. If you browse MinimServer in a way you suspect most clients get wrong, I would genuinely like to hear how Fidelia handles it, good or bad.

Disclosure first: I'm the developer of the app I'm about to describe. I'd rather be here answering questions than advertising, so ask me anything technical and I'll give you a straight answer.

I've been an audiophile far longer than I've been writing this particular app. I run the largest audiophile community in Romania, I review gear, and like most people reading this I've spent years getting a digital front end to a place I'm happy with. Separately, my day job is running a small iOS development studio.

For a long time those two things stayed in separate boxes. What finally brought them together was the frustration I suspect a lot of you know well: the hardware kept getting better, and the app I held in my hand to control it didn't. I'd sit down with a system I'd spent years assembling and drive it with something slow, that lost my place the moment I picked up a different device, that couldn't play half my DSD library locally, and that dropped the radio stations I actually listen to.

At some point it stopped making sense to keep complaining about it when writing iOS apps is literally what I do for a living. So I built the control point I wanted for myself. It's called Serento, it runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and it's now on the App Store.

The one principle I refused to compromise on: it stays out of the audio path. Serento finds your server and your renderer, tells them to talk to each other directly, and steps aside. It never proxies the stream and it never modifies your files - corrections and artwork layer on top, inside the app, never written back to your library.

What's in it:

- UPnP AV and OpenHome, using the renderer's own queue and Radio service where supported
- Native DSD up to DSD512 out to the streamer, DoP fallback for DACs that need it, PCM to 32/768, gapless
- DSD played on the device itself when there's no streamer in the chain - that one meant writing a decimator from scratch, which was the hardest part of the whole project
- Internet radio that holds stations other apps stall on, loop, or refuse outright
- A dedicated Classical section: composer, work, conductor, orchestra, soloist, period, form - with movements stitched back into whole works in the right order
- Queue, playback position, volume, favorites, tags and settings mirrored across every device you own
- Offline downloads, synced lyrics, ratings, private listening stats
- No account anywhere. Sync runs through your own private iCloud, so I never see your library or your listening history.

I use jriver Media Center for only one reason: compute and integrate DR into my audio files.

I paid for Jriver 30, and as I don't need more, never upgraded. But here is the issue: with Mac 26 Tahoe, the app crashes very badly at start. No way I can launch it.

Went onto the Jriver forum, which is the only way to get help. Wrote my problem. A guy who says is admin but is not working for jriver gave me a stupid advice, which did not work. So I posted my crash log. That was over a week ago.

And then silent, no one cares about my problem.

This has been recently discussed again on the the thread "The control app thread" as Lumin has introduced this compatibility. It seems to be the answer to a number of prayers. Well done all concerned, including of course Simon for making the feature..
But, being retired I have the time to try to squeeze the last drops of juice from this feature. So inevitably, a couple of questions...
1) The way I want to incorporate this feature is not to have to compile a lot of text for each album, but inside each album's directory I will place a file with the following information:

I have to press a link a second time to access the www and Wiki.

Is there a simple way to write in the address in the booklet file so that I go there on first pressing. Not a big issue, but cherry on the cake.

2) Another little feature, which I suspect may not be easily possible is to change the coding a little bit so that the booklet file resides in the artist directory and not the CD subdirectory. This would mean that I have only to put in my booklet file in once, and not tuck it is every CD directory when the artist has a number of recordings.

Any ideas gratefully received. I hope my stumbling ignorance may be of interest to others who are tempted to "have a go".

This would mean that I have only to put in my booklet file in once, and not tuck it is every CD directory when the artist has a number of recordings.

Any ideas gratefully received. I hope my stumbling ignorance may be of interest to others who are tempted to "have a go".

At present, he browses his file library manually using Windows Explorer and listens to the music through headphones plugged into the sound card. There has to be a better way to browse, find music, etcetera. But his budget is somewhat limited.

I did look at Foobar (which I remember working with Minimserver some years ago). But the UPNP plug in for Foobar doesn’t seem to work with the latest Foobar program.

So what is the most economic option for getting him set up using MinimServer? Does he need a streaming box (like the Wiim Pro)? Does he need a NAS? What’s the best way forward for him?

Sometimes it is better when making ethernet changes (e.g. reconfiguring the router) to switch with the VPN off.. Also iPlayer can be moody, as can the ITV equivalent. I understand they learn the addresses of the servers placed abroad and firewall them to prevent foreigners (those who do not have a VPN with a UK server) watching Death in Paradise....

But Radio Garden Works only from abroad. A great app.

One security tip, that I pass on from an expert, is to have several different Browsers installed on your computer. For example use Safari for general Googling and Facebook. Use something like Brave Browser to contact your banks, and Firefox to watch iPlayer.
