MinimServer recommended Tagging
Hello All,

My first post. Big Grin

I've just recently started using MinimServer on my newly built Synology NAS and have migrated my ripped CD files in Wav and Hi Res.

I would like to know if MinimServer has a recommended tagging structure for Rock, Pop, Jazz and classical music. If there is then I can re- structure my tags to make sure I gain the full benefit of MinimServer functionality.

I would rather I kick of my tagging in the prescribed format, rather than make my collection grow and then tackle it on a another day.

RE: MinimServer recommended Tagging
Welcome to the MinimServer forum!

There is no recommended tagging structure for MinimServer. The Intelligent Browsing approach used by MinimServer enables you to browse your library by any tags in any order (not just a fixed hierarchy such as Genre/Artist/Album) and is designed to work well with any set of tags.

As a starting point, the default configuration of MinimServer automatically reads the following tags if present: Album, AlbumArtist, Artist, Composer, Date, DiscNumber, DiscSubtitle, Genre, Group, Title, TrackNumber. You can configure MinimServer to read and index any other tag names in addition to these.

You should tag your files with information that is important to you and reflects the way you want to browse your library. It's a good idea to try a new tagging scheme with a few files at first to see what tags you find useful when browsing and what tags aren't needed.

RE: MinimServer recommended Tagging
Maybe worth noting that although the intelligent browsing can be done with any tags that you like some tags have special status when it comes to playing an album, from memory I think they are:

Album Artist & Album should be the same to group a set of songs into an album.

Title shows songs title when playing

DiscNumber and TrackNumber are used for ordering the tracks of an album

DiscSubtitle has an effect on how multi disc albums are shown

Group is usually used for classical music to group a series of tracks (movements) into one composition or work , see here for example.
