Nas and BubbleUPNP server
Hello everyone. I know it is bad form to post on a forum about software that isn't from the same company, but it is relevant to my use of Minimserver.
I got my fingers burnt with a Synology NAS (DS116). I had been using BubbleUPNP Server, but I updated to DSM 7: BubbleUPNP Server isn't compatible, and since the NAS is not intel-based, Docker can't be installed. Would anyone care to suggest an alternative to BubbleUPNP Server? (other than DS Audio, which I can't get on with). [For those who don't know, BubbleUPNP Server (https://bubblesoftapps.com/bubbleupnpserver2/) lets me stream my music library, as indexed by MinimServer over the internet to my phone in the car]. OR, it is perhaps time to change the NAS. I have three options. Is anyone running BubbleUPNP Server on any of these? Does it run natively (ie not through Docker)? I assume MinimServer will install on any of these equally well? Synology ds920+ Asustor AS5304T QNAP TS-464 With many thanks in advance for your help Fergus |

RE: Nas and BubbleUPNP server
The issue with BubbleUpnp is DSM 7 which has changed the permission logic. The developer has been clear: he will not make a DSM7 version of bubbleUpNp
So any synology on DSM6.x is perfect. Qnap is good. But not any other without docker. Cf. https://bubblesoftapps.com/bubbleupnpser...stall.html A last point: bubbleupnp does not stream anything. It just emulate OpenHome protocol; nothing more. It is still minimserver which streams. |

RE: Nas and BubbleUPNP server
Have you thought about using a VPN to the home LAN? This would remove the need to use BubbleUPnP Server for internet access, and be much more secure to boot.

RE: Nas and BubbleUPNP server
Thanks @simbun for the VPN to LAN suggestion. I confess that I have never done anything like that before, but I am willing to give it a try.
Is this the correct set of instructions? https://kb.synology.com/en-my/DSM/tutori...VPN_server Also: would I then use BubbleUPNP as normal, but connected to the NAS by VPN? Many thanks |

Given the instructions are minimal I assume that once you've selected OpenVPN (or WireGuard if it's available) it steps you through the rest of the process. Given you've already got BubbleUPnP server working remotely I assume you know how to open a port on your router. Once it's set up, you'll need to install the OpenVPN/WireGuard app on your phone and configure with your Synology's credentials and assuming MinimServer is also on the Synology then it should just appear in BubbleUPnP. If MinimServer isn't on the Synology, getting UPnP to work over a VPN can be troublesome, so hopefully that's not the case. Would be helpful if anyone with a Synology has any input at this stage. One thing to check up front, are you using BubbleUPnP server for anything other than internet access e.g. transcoding e.t.c, as you'll just get vanilla MinimServer through the VPN. |

Thanks @simbun. I'll report back in due course. It'll probably be a few days at the earliest. Regards

I've installed OpenVPN on both my Android phone, and on the (Synology) NAS. All working fine and connecting OK. MinimServer is installed on the NAS and shows up on BubbleUPnP on my phone perfectly when I'm at home and thus not connected via VPN. When I leave home and connect to the NAS using OpenVPN on my phone, it's hit and miss whether MinimServer appears on BubbleUPnP. Sometimes it's there, and when it is it works fine, but more often than not, it is not shown in the list of libraries. The Synology Media Server is usually visible (more than MinimServer) but even that is sometimes not listed either. Any ideas? Thanks |
