Question Artist Sorting incorrectly
Hi All,

Been using MinimServer for a few years and it's been great, makes me glad Twonky broke on my old nas! Smile

After lots of tidying up crappy metadata I'm in a pretty good place, but one artist is annoying me: The Divine Comedy.

Due to the volume of content (almost everything twice, plus singles) I have things tagged as such:

Artist: The Diving Comedy
Album Artist: The Divine Comedy
Or; The Divine Comedy Reissues
Or: The Divine Comedy Singles, etc

Under Artist and AlbumArtist these sort as:
Divine Comedy Reissues
Divine Comedy Singles, etc
Divine Comedy

Under All Artists things show correctly:
The Divine Comedy then albums sorted chronoligically then:
Divine Comedy
Divine Comedy Reissues
Divine Comedy Singles, etc

Some other artists sorting wrongly was due to data mp3tag wasn't showing up such as multiple sortas entries that musicbee revealed and helped me get around but for the life of me i can't work out whats going on with these.

Below is the profile summary I'm using.
contentDir = /volume1/music
displayName = Music
excludePattern = *.mp4,*.m4v
indexTags = Artist, Album, Genre, All Artists, AlbumArtist,Date,Composer
listViewAlbums = 99999
mergeFolderAlbums = true
tagOptions = Album.sortTags={+Date,Album},Artist.ignore.sort={The },AlbumArtist.ignore.sort={The }

Thanks in advance for any help, i did a search of the forum for artist sort but the two entries that came up weren't relevant.

Edward

tagOptions = Album.sortTags={+Date,Album},Artist.ignore.sort={The },AlbumArtist.ignore.sort={The }

This apparent anomaly is due to the use of the 'ignore' option.

It is changing the Artist/AlbumArtist sort value
from The Divine Comedy
to Divine Comedy, The
but displaying the index value asis, i.e. The Divine Comedy

and

from The Divine Comedy Reissues
to Divine Comedy Reissue, The
but displaying the index value asis, i.e. The Divine Comedy Reissues

You could 'solve' this by also applying the 'ignore' option to the Album tag.

Edit:
Or perhaps, to 'correct' the sort, change the AlbumArtist tag

from The Divine Comedy Reissues
to The Divine Comedy, The Reissues

Thanks very much. I'd tried clearing all the ", The" from the sort fields using MusicBee, but it must have put it back!

Are you saying you see both The Divine Comedy and Divine Comedy under All Artists?

My appologies, no I forgot to include the "The " because i was more thinking about the order at the end so under all artists i click The Divine Comedy (the only option in this case), then i see everything from those three Album Artists as I would want; "The Divine Comedy", "The Divine Comedy Reissues", & finally "The Divine Comedy Singles etc"

My apologies for not being more precise.

The 'ignore' option causes MinimServer to create virtual sort tags, which are not written to the audio file. It is the virtual sort tags I was referring to.

However, if your audio files contain sort tags then perhaps you should configure MinimServer as below.

Artist.value.sort={ArtistSort}, AlbumArtist.value.sort={ArtistSort}

See the Custom Artist index sorting section of the user guide for more details as to how to implement this correctly.

The names you see under All Artists come from the Artist tags in your files. The names you see under Artist and AlbumArtist come from the AlbumArtist tags in your files. Your MinimServer "ignore" settings to change the sort order have no effect on the name that is displayed.
