I've done this, but I can't find a way to use it for a normal reply instead of a quick reply. Is this possible?

So, it's working. Thanks much!

You do it in the Quick reply form without clicking on "New Reply". You just select the text you want to quote, click on the new icon, type you text, select what to quote again etc.

You may also want to install http://mods.mybb.com/view/go-to-full-reply-edit plugin to switch to the Full reply from Quick reply with the text you've typed intact.
