Basic instructions
I'm brand new to MinimServer. I have installed it on a Synology DS716+. I installed MinimWatch on a mac. MinimServer indexed the music files. MinimWatch sees MinimServer. I can't figure out how to play anything. Feeling rather stupid at the moment, but need some help after several hours of trying....
Incidentally the installation instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Thanks! SpruceFan |

RE: Basic instructions
Welcome to the MinimServer forum!
MinimServer is a UPnP AV server. To play music, you also need a UPnP AV renderer and a UPnP AV control point. See this page for some background information about UPnP AV. |

RE: Basic instructions
Apologies if I'm asking a really dumb question but... In your description of server it's not clear if that's where mini server is running or if it can run on a pic and access a nas for the music files. I have pc, nas with music files, Lin kazoo as control on iPad and renderer (Sonore SSR). I load mini server to the pc, tell it where the music is, find the server via the iPad. All good except I don't see where I tell minimserver to play through the SSR. Do I have to run minimserver on a pc and control the sound renderer from the pc? Thanks for the help.

MinimServer is intended to be run on the device where the music files are stored; if the music files are on the NAS, MinimServer should run on the NAS. MinimServer supports a wide range, but by no means all, makes and models of NAS. What make and model is your NAS? David |

It's synology ds214 play so yes I can install it there. So do I then run say Jriver or foobar? |

To manage MinimServer on the NAS (initiate rescan, check the log, change properties etc.) you will need to install MinimWatch on your PC. I won't go into the usage details, as they are clearly explained in the User Guide. Once you have done this you have a working music server. For a complete music system, you need two other networked components - a Control Point (which is a piece of software installed on a PC, tablet or phone, and, as its name suggests, provides the User Interface for selecting and playing music) and a player or Renderer (which is the actual playback device, and can be a physical device or a software application on the computer). If you already have a separate device as, say, part of your hifi system, this is the Renderer. It's a bit difficult to advise on what further software you need without knowing what system you have. However, if all you want to do is play music from your NAS and stream Internet Radio on your computer, my advice is to keep things as simple as possible in the first instance. If you have and can work JRiver and/or foobar2000, by all means try them with MinimServer, but they are both a bit complex as a means of getting a simple system working. I like the free OpenHome Player, which just works in the background on your computer. You can then use any compatible Control Point, but Linn Kazoo, which works with the OpenHome Player, would be a good choice for the PC. This is all free - no need to buy an expensive Linn streamer to use their software. Hope this helps, David |

RE: Basic instructions
The Sonore SSR is a UPnP renderer and it should show up in a UPnP control point. The reason you aren't seeing it as an available "room" in Linn Kazoo is that Linn Kazoo only shows renderers that are OpenHome compliant. You need to use a different UPnP control point that shows all UPnP renderers. If you have an Android device, BubbleUPnP is highly recommended. On an iPad, you could try 8player, mconnectFree or MediaConnect.

Minim was recommended by the Sonore folks as a better alternative re SQ than JR. Guess they're Android! Just FYI the SSR feeds PSAudio directstream to Conrad Johnsom ART amps to Amphion 7L's. The SSR is magic. My other source is custom built audio dedicated Windows system with Fidelizer, AO 2.0 and Roon with hd plex linear psi and PPA USB card. I'm amazed at the SSR every moment it speaks. |

RE: Basic instructions
Why not install BubbleUPNP server (its not a server!) on your Synology NAS? It will then create an Openhome version of your Upnp or Dlna renderer which you can see in Linn Kazoo. Works well for me for my Cyrus Stream XP which otherwise isn't Openhome.
Download Synology version here BubbleSoft for Synology Streaming from a Synology 1511+ to a Cyrus Stream XP2 QX, 2x Roberts 93i, A Revo Superconnect, a Mede8er 600 3D and a few Squeezeboxes thrown in! |
