Hi Folks,

New to the forum and thought this thread was a handy entrée as my first post.

Rest assured butterfly75 that the DS415play and Minimserver work beautifully together!

I've recently performed a major technology upgrade in my system in order to move away from a desktop PC music serving solution. After much research (helped in no small part by the good folks on this forum I might add) purchased a DS415play (with 4X4TB HDDs) and opted to run Minimserver on it. Along with this I upgraded my PS Audio Perfectwave DAC II and Bridge (I) combination with a Directstream upgrade kit and a Bridge II.

Finished it all yesterday and, wow, was like a kid in a candy store! Had to tear myself away from the listening chair to go to bed!

Simon, you've done a great job! Please, please, please keep up the good work Smile

Cheers,
MikeK

PS The UPnP Control Point replacement is still a work in progress. I'm getting by at the moment using the 'control point' functionality in Windows Media Player running on Windows 10. Hope to replace that 'soon'. Argh! More research Tongue

RE: Minimserver on Synology DS415play?
Thank you, MikeK. I have a 4-bay DS415play, but with two 6-Terabyte hard discs. I have just begun ripping a collection of 2,500 classical albums in WAV format via Musichi Ripper. I will keep my music on the server, as I have three PC control points for three stereo systems in different parts of the house. I also stream music to my iPad, which, with headphones, has excellent quality sound.

I will keep my database folder locally on a WD Cloud for the time being while I build and edit my library of files. Musichi will help me keep track of what I have played via the Ratings function (Most of this collection I have not yet heard). Now that I am retired, I have all the time in the world to enjoy the candy store.

I appreciate the information on your using "PS Audio Perfectwave DAC II and Bridge (I) combination with a Directstream upgrade kit and a Bridge II." That gives me more to explore in my search for "near blu-ray" sound. My best "candy store" listening was to a blu-ray recording of Mahler's 9th (Gewandhaus/Chailly) played through my Yamaha towers. That was pure heaven.

Lucky you, reaching 'retirement'. You'll probably end up being busier than when you were 'working'! I have just over 200 weeks to go but who's counting? ;-)

That's a mammoth ripping project you're facing. I faced a similar task about 2 years ago albeit with only about 700 CDs. Like you I wanted to rip to WAV format but I'm now embarking on a project to convert them all to FLAC! Why you may ask? Tagging. I've come to realize that your library is really only as good as it's ability to find stuff quickly and easily and, let's face it, with limited tagging capability and no commonly accepted standard, WAV just doesn't cut it. FLAC commonly uses the Vorbis standard for tagging and if you switch on the transcoding feature in Minimserver, you're DAC will not be able to tell the difference between a WAV stream and one that has been transcoded from FLAC.

If you're looking for a good DAC to which you can stream DSD (actually DSD over PCM but that's not important) then I do recommend the PSA DirectStream DAC. It appears to have received universally excellent reviews and, although I don't claim to have 'golden ears', there was an enormous improvement to my ears. But of course Minimserver may have contributed to the improved SQ ;-)

Thank very much and welcome to the MinimServer forum!

If you have an Android phone or tablet, I can highly recommend BubbleUPnP as the best control point I have used. If you don't already have an Android device, it would be worth buying a cheap 7-inch tablet just to run BubbleUPnP! Smile

Thanks Simon. That's an idea worth investigating. BubbleUPnP has popped up quite a bit on my radar
