KDE5: minimwatch can not create sys tray icon
Hi Simon,

I have upgraded my kubuntu 14.10 installation to 15.04 because july is the last month the old none-LTS kubuntu version is supported. Unfortunately KDE 5 drops the old xembed systray support and implements something new:
http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/20...ray-icons/

When trying to start minimwatch on KDE 5 I only get a window that tells me "MinimWatch: unable to create tray icon".

Is there a chance that you can implement the new "status notifier" systray? Or is there a way to run minimwatch as a normal window instead of just a systray icon?

I also tried the workaround using the program "wmsystemtray" that opens an alternate systray but this does not work. (Tested with minimwatch and another tool , too)

Greetings
Gert

Ah wait! It is important to give wmsystemtray the bgcolor. So this does work:

wmsystemtray --non-wmaker --bgcolor white

It's not very elegant, but it works. Smile

Thanks for posting this workaround for the problem.

This is a Java issue, not something that I can change in MinimServer. Which version of Java are you using? There is a small chance that a newer version of Java might recognise the "status notifier" systray.

RE: KDE5: minimwatch can not create sys tray icon
I am using the openjdk from kubuntu 15.04. If it annoys me to much, I maybe will try the oracle jdk version.

java version "1.7.0_79"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.5.5) (7u79-2.5.5-0ubuntu1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.79-b02, mixed mode)

I found that openjdk 1.8 is available in kubuntu, too. But this version behaves the same.

openjdk version "1.8.0_45-internal"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_45-internal-b14)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.45-b02, mixed mode)

Thanks for this information. It seems the workaround you have found is the only solution.

RE: KDE5: minimwatch can not create sys tray icon
Just have installed KDE5.5 now. This version does support the old style systemtray icons again. The minimwatch icon occurs in the normal systray again. Fine so far. Unfortunately it does not open the context menu anymore, so it is completely useless now. Sad

I have to report this bug to the KDE guys. I hope to find a workaround until it is fixed.

(Wouldn't it be an idea to better make minimwatch a normal application instead of a systray app?)

Another old style xembed icon (written in perl and gtk) does open the context menu. So it seems to be a problem with the java based icon.

I recall a problem a couple of years ago with blacklisting or whitelisting that could prevent Java icons from being displayed. The solution was to change the blacklisting or whitelisting properties. Could this perhaps be related to the problem here? I don't have any other ideas but perhaps one of the KDE guys will be able to explain what is causing the incompatibility.

Which black/whitelisting properties do you mean? Is this an option in java somewhere or in KDE or X, etc?

I have reported the issue. Will see if someone reacts.
