Streaming Radio
Simple requirement:

I want to play Internet Radio from my PC to my audio system.

I have Minimserver and minimstreamer (both installed in the last few days) and a DAC taking the PC output to my audio system and this works well for playing my ripped CDs.

What else do I need to find radio? I have Windows (7) Media player, Videolan (VLC) and latest is Foobar2000.

Foobar can't handle Simon's sample BBC Radio file, WMP gets to the BBC radio channels but the Beeb announces that it cannot send files in a format that WMP can use. I think I understand the last bit - the well publicised problems about the Beeb changing the output of its Internet offerings.

Do I need any other software, in the form of a dedicated Internet Radio player? If so, what would people recommend?

I find all the technicalities a bit of a fog, though Simon has already unravelled one of my problems with playlists.

Any help gratefully received,

Paul

See this page for details of how to set up MinimServer and MinimStreamer to play the BBC stations. Once you have got this working, it is fairly simple to add other stations.

You need to be running a UPnP renderer (a PC software program) to send the audio to your DAC. Of the options you have listed, foobar2000 is the best choice.

OK, I have pointed Foobar at your BBC file (renamed to BBC Radio.m3u) and the right hand box shows '?-?' under Artist/album, 'bbc_radio_three' under title track/artist and '?' under duration. If I double click on, say, bbc_radio_three I get the following error message:

You should not point foobar2000 at the BBC Radio.m3u file. You need to follow all the steps on this page. When you get to step 8, you need to use a UPnP control point (for example, foobar2000 with the foo_upnp extension installed) to browse the MinimServer UPnP server library and select and play the radio stream from within the MinimServer library browsing hierarchy.

If you've successfully installed the foo_UPnP plugin component for Foobar2000, you'll be able to access the UPnP Browser popup window from Foobar's View menu so that you can make the radio station selection from MinimServer as instructed by Simon. Navigating the library tree hiearchy in the UPnP Browser Window works in tandem with its own playlist tab, UPnP Browser Selection, on Foobar's main window. If you follow the navigation instructions in step 8, the radio staion list should eventually appear on the UPnP Browser Selection tab, similar to ordinary music file tracks.

The UPnP Browser is in effect the UPnP control point that the foo_UPnP plugin provides for streaming by the Foobar player itself, rather than controlling an external renderer on the network. The foo_UPnP plugin provides a different mechansim if you want to use Foobar as a control point for an external renderer - the UPnP Controller popup window.

Success! Thank you both very much for helping me through the fog. I was finding it frustrating, as everything seemed to be in place, but still no progress. I just wasn't looking in the right place, and was befuddled by control points, renderers and such. I'm now listening to BBC R3, so I think I'm sorted. I'll stick with BBC radio for now, then branch out into other stations.

Thanks again,

Paul

RE: Streaming Radio
I thought I had the problem cracked! However I now can't get BBC radio anymore. As far as I am aware, nothing in my setup has changed. I start MinimServer, which has the Streamer plugin, then try to get Foobar to play a station from the UPnP Browsr selection. I get a message for each item in the BBC radio station list :

Unable to open item for playback (Could not connect to host):

I'd welcome any help,

thanks,

Paul

This normally means the IP address for the computer or NAS running MinimServer has changed (in your case, from 192.168.1.201 to something else). To prevent this from happening again, you can do either of the following:

1) set a static IP address in the configuration for your computer or NAS

2) configure a DHCP address reservation in your router so that the router always gives out the same IP address when the computer or NAS connects to it

RE: Streaming Radio
Hi Simon, Thanks for that. I have set a fixed IP address and that has sorted the problem. In the process I have also learned a little about IP addresses, which can only be a good thing.

You're welcome! I have added a note about this to this page so that other users are aware of this issue.
