Problems using "alphaGroup"

Hi,

I'm trying to enable alphabetical grouping using the instruction in this section.

When I enable this it changes on my device and when I navigate to say the list of albums it does show an alphabetical list. However, when I select any of the letters the device says "network timeout".

When I look at the MinimServer log it says "MinimServer: 0$albums$ isn't a valid object". This happens every time I select a letter on my device.

So far I have tried setting the alphaGroup property to all and artists, but neither have worked.

Anyone know how to the fix this? I have thousands of albums so being able to navigate them in this way is really important.

Has alphaGroup worked successfully for you before? Which Control Point are you using? I also assume you are using the current version of MinimServer, and that it is up to date.

Setting the property should not be a problem. Just 'all' (without the quotes) should work. When you set the property, did you restart MinimServer? And did you get the message as soon as MinimServer restarted, or only when you tried to access the alpha groupings in your control point?

This is caused by a bug in your control point. The correct container ID that MinimServer is sending to the control point is something like:

0$albums$#1

The control point is unable to handle the # character correctly and is truncating this string to:

0$albums$

Which control point are you using?

Thanks for the replies. This is the first time I've tried to set up the server so I've not had it working before. I've only just installed it so assume I'm using the latest version. Also, I only get this message when I try to access the alpha groupings, not when I restart MinimServer. Restarting seems fine.

If I read the Roberts manual correctly, the 'control point' you are using is built into the Roberts Radio. It would require a change to the radio firmware to correct the error Simon has identified. It might nevertheless be useful for you to report the problem to Roberts.

However, pages 49 and 50 of the manual indicate that the Radio can be used as a UPnP renderer (or player) with a separate control point. Unfortunately, the example given is Windows Media Player, which has rather limited capabilities when used with MinimServer (see this section of the MinimServer User Guide).

The choice of alternative UPnP control points on Windows is a bit limited, with Linn Kinsky (a free download) possibly being the best option - if it can identify your Roberts Radio on the network. The choice for tablets and phones is better, but still less than ideal. If you have an Android tablet or smartphone, Bubble UPnP would probably be a good choice and works well with MinimServer; you would certainly find it easier to use than the controls on the Roberts, again provided that this is a genuinely UpnP compliant player. Bubble is free to try, and only costs £3.04 for the license you would need to use it fully.
