Best practice for date tagging
Hello,

is there a best practice for tagging of dates. I use MP3tag and ID3v2.4 and most of my music has the year tagged as YYYY, but little by little I put the release date in the year tag. Is this recomended?

Another problem is the date tagging of remastered albums. At example, Dio's album Dream Evil was originally released at 1987-07-21, the remastered in 2013 and I tagged it this way:
YEAR 1987-07-21
ORIGYEAR 1987-07-21
RELEASETIME 2013-03-07

Other Albums I tagged this way, but I think it's wrong:
DATE 2305 (DDMM)
YEAR 2014
But this album is displayed in my UPNP-Player under 2305. It treats the date as year.

RE: Best practice for date tagging
I would say settle on a scheme you are happy with and stick to it. As long as you are consistent and can pass the relevant tags to your control point then it's good.

I use Year for the date the album originally came out as this tends to be set by tagging programs and picked up by most control points. To me, I feel that an album is fixed in time when it first came out, so Beatles still is 60s/70s regardless of when the Cd or download appeared.

I then use Original Year for the date the Cd or download "originally" was issued. So in the case of the Beatles this may be when the 16/44 download appeared.

I know this might not make sense to others but it works for me :-)

So get a scheme that works for you and go with it.

Peter

Is is wrong to use the DATE tag for a ddmm value. The DATE tag should contain either yyyy or yyyy-mm-dd.

Unfortunately, Mp3tag displays the DATE tag value as *Year". This is probably the reason for the confusion on how to use these tags.
