Error: unexpected end of file in WAV

Error: unexpected end of file in WAV
My setup is the following.

Synology DS213+ (os DSM 5.0 latest)
MinimServer latest
XLD latest for ripping
Metadatics latest for adding tags, etc...

Since updating Metadatics, I now get this issue when writing to my WAV files.

Error: unexpected end of file in WAV file hidef/Adele/Skyfall - Single/01 Skyfall.wav (length 164831066)

In order to correct the error, I have to reconvert again in XLD. Very annoying. This issue was not present in the previous version.

Is anyone using similar setup to this and can confirm if they also get the issue?

Many thanks, Anton

It sounds like the latest version of Metadatics might be writing WAV files in an incorrect format. The other possibility is a bug in how MinimServer is reading these files.

I will install the latest version of Metadatics and try this myself to see if I get the same error.

Hi Simon

Many thanks four your prompt response. It will be interesting to see what you find. I have also sent a mail to Metadatics support to see if they have any ideas.

Thanks

RE: Error: unexpected end of file in WAV
Hi Simon

I found this thread which describes a similar problem I am having. After reading this I thought that Metadatics could be the problem however I downloaded a fresh copy of this album from Qobuz and did not run it through Metadatics. As you can see by the log file I am encountering the same problems. It is a WAV file which I am experimenting with (sound quality). The FLAC file of the same album, also downloaded from Qobuz, did not give a problem

Best
Gregg

These messages aren't the same as the previous problem.

1) Messages like this:

Error: unexpected end of file at offset 0 in file Louis Armstrong/Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy/16 Louis Armstrong - Long Gone (From the Bowlin' Green).flac (length 0)

are reporting a FLAC file with zero length (no contents).

2) Messages like this:

Error: incorrect FLAC header 0xb902d201 at offset 0 in file Antonio Vivaldi/Antonio Vivaldi - Le Quattro Stagioni - The English Concert - Trevor Pinnock GL/04 Antonio Vivaldi - L'estate - Allegro Non Molto.flac (length 50437504)

are reporting a FLAC file that is corrupt and doesn't start with a valid FLAC header

3) Messages like this:

Error: ID3v2 'COMM' frame has invalid size 339 at offset 340 in file D'Angelo/D_Angelo-Black_Messiah/01-01-D_Angelo-Ain_t_That_Easy-SMR.wav (length 166495788)

are reporting an ID3v2 frame whose length extends beyond the end of the ID3v2 frame data section of the WAV file. If you would like to upload this file:

01-11-D_Angelo-Back_to_the_Future_Part_II-SMR.wav

to my FTP server, I will give you more exact details of what is wrong with the file. I will PM you the server details.

RE: Error: unexpected end of file in WAV
OK Simon - Thanks
The other files I will re rip and correct.

The D'Angelo files are a brand new album just released this week and downloaded in 24 bit from Qobuz. I would be interested to know the problem

The form size in the RIFF chunk is 115982144, This specifies a total data size of 115982152 but the file contains only 115793452 bytes of data.

RE: Error: unexpected end of file in WAV
Hi Simon

I am in the process of re downloading the files from Qobuz. It is possible that the file I uploaded to your server was the downloaded WAV from Qobuz run through XLD to convert it again to WAV in the hope that it would fix the problem. You will have then officially downloaded WAV file in a moment.

If I understand your comment above (in layman's terms) it appears to say that the actual file size does not match what the "form size" specifies it to be. If this is the case than there should be a way around this ie this was not a ripped file but rather a commercially sold one from Qobuz. With all of the tracks they sell it could mean that many have this problem.....and will be unable to be read by Minimserver???

Gregg

RE: Error: unexpected end of file in WAV
OK - file is being uploaded as we speak. This is the official straight from Qobuz file.
Here is what the error log generated for this file

Error: ID3v2 'COMM' frame has invalid size 339 at offset 336 in file D'Angelo/01-03-D_Angelo-The_Charade-SMR.wav (length 115700268)

As the message says, the COMM frame in the ID3v2.3 tag has an incorrect size value of 339. From looking at the contents of the file, this value should be 211.

It seems that XLD got confused by this and made a bigger mess when trying to fix it.

It looks like the COMM size value was encoded using the ID3v2.4 format encoding rules instead of the ID3v2.3 format encoding rules. (The ID3v2 tag in this file is an ID3v2.3 tag.) If the COMM size field in the file is decoded according to the ID3v2.4 rules, this produces the correct value of 211.

I hope this information is useful to Qobuz in fixing their file encoding bug.
