RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
It sounds like the problem is related to the JPLAY app. Have you reported this to the JPLAY developers?

But what I am asking is that the Tidal icon showing on Melco screen is, nothing described on manual and no info whatsoever.... Jplay also said, firstly, find out what this icon means. I am lost.... |

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
I just remember that it seems this problem starts just after I install MinimStreamer...
I will uninstall it and try again. vTuner is not properly working anyway so radio station is not in use. However is "Tidal" icon is something else... I can't find any info regarding this icon from anywhere.... I asked Melco support and see what answer will come... EDIT: MinimStreamer is nothing to do with this problem.. with or without it, same problem persist... |

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Hello all - not sure if this is the best place to post this Q so please move it if so - but I was wondering if anyone had either (1) compared the new Melco N1 to, say, the N100 and/or has listened to the new Lumin Music L2 Music Library.
I currently use a Japan-only N1A model (DELA branded rather than Melco) that has a 2TB SSD. I believe this SSD option was only offered in the Japan market. I am pretty floored by the N100. But I am running out of space and, to my knowledge, simply upgrading the SSD is not possible. |

I use N1 with 4TB SSD x 2. Total 8TB. My library took 4.8TB total, so it is oversized, but who knows if this is not enough. Upgrade 3TB HDD x 2 to 4TB SSD is not a big beal, only 4TB SSD cost was big deal and new 2.5" SSD is impossible to use current 3.5" bracket, was another problem. Melco is (on my knowledge) capable of maximum 8TB dual storage with/without use RAID format. I don't know N100 but I am sure it is same N1(actually old N1A/2EX has exactly same case as N100's).Lumin, on the other hand, I never have, but listened couple days by loan from friend, is not that impressive compared Melco. I did test Aurender too, but for me, Melco was the one that I can love. Using minimserver and mConnect(not Melco HD app, it is mConnect's OEM version with vTuner feature included, but not versatile like mConnect HD, it only connect to Melco, not possible to connect other DLNA controller nor player), it has superb performance and musical ability. But always said, everything is for your ear... do not take this opinion seriously if you are looking for new streamer or network player. Satisfaction is most important factor when looking for new device especially hi-fi music lovers. |

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
As there was interest expressed in comparing Melco N1 with Lumin L2, I thought I would add a comment here. I have both of these units on hand, recently coupling the Lumin L2 to an X1 as an upgrade to an older Melco N1Z HA60. The Lumin, with its newer solid state drives and fiber network seemed like a clear choice and does, in fact, sound quite good. However, at the recommendation of Alan Ainslie the UK/US Melco agent (alan@admm.uk.com), I upgraded the N1Z with the latest 4.50 version of the -EX firmware. The improvement in sound quality was surprising. In side-by-side comparison with high-resolution music files, I would rate the Melco slightly better than the L2 when both are ethernet-connected. When the L2 is networked with fiber, it might have a slight edge, but that involves other variables, including differences between SFP modules and switches. So I would say to anyone with a Melco N1Z on hand, Keep it! With the 4.5 firmware, it sounds great.

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Thanks for sharing this. My Melco N1A media server doesn't have a fibre optic port, so I have connected the Ethernet cable to an ADOT media converter to send the stream to the fibre port of a Melco S100 switch. This provides a small improvement in sound quality, which seems consistent with your results.

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
I can confirm, connecting an N1, S100 and Adot as Simon does, results in an small improvement.
I slightly prefer, however, using the optical link between my S100 and Linn KDS. It also serves to isolate my streamer from my router which is connected to the S100. Which means I employ my N1 in 'direct' mode, using it simply as a NAS. The things we do for hifi….. Donuk. York |

Simon and Donuk, I have been back and forth with the Sonore&SGC people on the subject of fiber switches and SFP modules in the course of troubleshooting an unreliable opticalRendu. Net result was that sound quality does improve with the optical links (I also confirmed this with the Lumin L2) but seems dependent on just which switches, modules, and even fiber, you choose. I got just enough experience with this subject to view it as quicksand, which will probably draw me back when I have more time to lose. Meantime, the opticalRendu never became reliable with Bubble and MinimServer. |

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
I am using ADOT (single-mode) for the optical link and it has been 100% reliable, just like an Ethernet cable but with better sound.
