Linn provides a basic UPNP AV mode, which I would guess does not support gapless play or cache the playlist. Kinsky can control the players in this mode, so maybe it can also control JRiver. It is free, so the only cost of trying it is time and effort. Have you tried installing BubbleUPnP Server ? With this software layer installed on your music server, you can wrap an OpenHome renderer around a UPnP renderer to make it support OpenHome extensions. I have used it with the Lumin app to play to a Moon Mind renderer, which does no support OpenHome extensions natively. For me it worked very well. I have used it with the Kinsky app also. As DavidHB wrote, without recourse to BubbleUPnP Server, I was never able to play more that a single track at a time on a non OpenHome renderer. This limitation is now gone. I must say however that I still prefer using BubbleUPnP app on Android whenever possible. Hope this can help. |

I have downloaded the free 8player lite but cannot find any obvious way to make it recognise the existence of either of my two UPnP/DLNA renderers (J River Media Center & Oppo BDP-105). Given this experience I have been a little hesitant about paying for the full version of 8player or for the PlugPlayer app. Kinsky does at least find my two renderers but, to my eyes, has a very quirky and non-intuitive interface. RE: Best controller for iPad?
I installed 8player lite and played around a little bit with it. It plays using the iPad as the renderer, which is what I was trying to do at the moment. The actual display interface seems a little wasteful of screen space---it could fit a lot more items in on one screen.
I was thinking of trying plugplayer, and I've also seen a recommendation for goodplayer, but these don't seem to have free trial versions. |

RE: Best controller for iPad?
Hi Adrian,
I have no interest in playing my music on the iPad itself. However, I gave it a try (using MinimServer as my source) and have to agree that the interface leaves a great deal to be desired. It would never tempt me away from BubbleUPnP. David |

Thanks for this suggestion. Given the lack of good iOS control points that can play directly to a UPnP AV renderer, this approach is worth considering. I don't much like the idea of installing another product to compensate for Kinsky's limitations, but it might be better than the alternatives. |

Hi Andre, I have just installed BubbleUPnP Server on my Synology NAS but I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do next. Please clarify. David |

RE: Best controller for iPad?
I've now made some further progress with BubbleUPnP Server, after discovering a 'BubbleUPnP Server' icon on the Synology main menu that let me complete some missing steps in the configuration process.
Kinsky now shows an additional 'Room' option that reflects my J River Media Center renderer as modified by BubbleUPnP Server. Using this 'Room' allows Kinsky to step through a playlist in a normal manner, with the name of the current track appearing in the top left corner of the screen (previously, this 'playing now' indicator never updated when I changed the track). However, I still have usability issues, such as the volume control option not working. Another quirk is that even after using Edit/Delete to remove the current playlist from my selected 'Room', Kinsky still shows the last active track name and cover art in the top left corner. David |

Sorting was set to "auto" and they were showing up in alphabetical order by title rather than in track number order, and when I tried to change the sorting method the other options were grayed out, which seemed kind of strange. Is the sorting supposed to be determined by the server or the client? Has anybody tried Plugplayer or Goodplayer who can comment on whether either provide a better interface? |

It does have some however, like volume control and pause/seek not working on the Moon Mind renderer. But those limitations seem due to the Mind renderer itself where those functionalities do not appear to be properly implemented ar the UPnP level. For ex., those also show up when using BubbleUPnP android app to control the Moon Mind. It should be kept in mind that BubbleUPnP server cannot compensate for renderer deficiencies at the hardware level. Gapless playback is such a case. |

Most control points trust the server to do a good job and leave the server's sort order unchanged. Some control points don't trust the server and insist on imposing their own sort order. There are a few control points that provide both options. Quote:Has anybody tried Plugplayer or Goodplayer who can comment on whether either provide a better interface? I have used PlugPlayer on an iPod (not iPad) and I'd rate the interface as below average. |
