Java on Synology NAS
I have a Synology DS411+ii NAS that I'm using as a music server, streaming to a LUMIN. I currently have Minimserver and Java SE for embeded 6 installed. Now that I've updated the Synology to DSM 5.0 it is asking me to update Java. It first wants me to remove my current version.

If I remember correctly, when I installed Java it wasn't even through Java manager, and there was an extremely complicated and convoluted process for installing Java that I was only able to do because some nice person had posted a tutorial on this forum on how to do it.

So the question is--do I need to update Java? If so how, and is this now a much simpler/direct process?

With DSM 5.0, the Java Manager install process is now much simpler and I recommend this as the best approach if you have an Intel-based NAS (as you do). I suggest you uninstall your current version of Java and install Java 7 by following the instructions in the section "Installing Java (Intel and ARM Armada models)" on this page.

RE: Java on Synology NAS
OK. I deleted Java 6 and tried to install Java 7 through Java Manager. I followed the link and instructions that Java Manager gave me to find and then download the correct version, which was: jdk-7u55-linix-i586.tar.gz

When I then select this file in the Java Manager screen and hit "OK" to install it, after about 10-15 seconds I get a message saying "Insufficient disc space", even though I have plenty of disc space.

RE: Java on Synology NAS
Well, after trying to install Java 7 for about the 5th time it finally worked. Don't know why I kept getting the message about insufficient disc space the first few attempts, but anyway all seems good now.

On a tangential note--why is it that DSD albums show up on my LUMIN app with the songs on alphabetical order, rather than the correct order (as they appear in the Synology)?? Is this a Minimserver/Java thing?

I haven't seen this before. Perhaps Java Manager uses a temporary area to unzip the JDK file and this area was full for some reason.

You will need to ask the LUMIN people about this.

RE: Java on Synology NAS
Just a FYI on this topic. A new Synology update was installed today, which prompted for a new version of Java manager to be installed.

I needed to subsequently reinstall the jdk-7u55-linux-i586.tar.gz package as well.

All went smoothly first time and minimserver worked fine (NB: it needed to be restarted)

regards
Nick

RE: Java on Synology NAS
I am checking this to try to find out if I need to update to DSM 5.0.
Apparently not! Recommended but not mandatory.
Problem is, on my Synology 712+, I don't have the option of udate to DSM 5.0 but to DSM 4.3-3827 instead..

Does someone knows hot to upgrade to DSM 5.0?

You need to update to 4.3 first before you can go to 5.0.

Great, thanks.
In fact I discovered myself after upgrading to 4.3
I have now installed 8.0 and will test it in a short while and confirm if there are any SQ issues...at the same time I thank to make the web app to rescan!

Now would be soo cool if lumin could call the rescan command from the ipad app.
