Having switched back to normal FLAC serving rather than streaming, the files are playing fine. I would agree that it looks like there's a network bandwidth issue but really there should be more than enough bandwidth for this, shouldn't there?

It might be a faulty switch. The only way to find out for sure is to substitute another switch to see if this cures the problem.
