RE: The control app thread
Is there an advantage of using BubbleDS instead of BubbleUPnP with an openhome renderer? I ask because BubbleUPnP is speaking openhome, too, with my lumin U1 mini.

No advantage unless you prefer the fact that BubbleDS is strictly for audio thus has all irrelevant settings removed (it also only detects OH renderers).
Also if you use the Radio tab of BubbleDS (whose support depend on OH renderers, but upmpdcli based ones support it assuming you can freely configure it), you obviously need it.
BubbleUPnP is updated more often that BubbleDS so might be the better choice.
Speaking of which, I will update BubbleDS soon to make it on par with BubbleUPnP.

Thanks for clarifying this. I didn't remember correctly the difference between BubbleDS and BubbleUPNP with a Linn DS as renderer. The difference is (I think) that BubbleUPnP uses UpnpAv only to control a Linn DS and BubbleDS uses OpenHome only.

Correct, to control a Linn DS as OpenHome renderer you need BubbleDS. Although BubbleUPnP could absolutely also do it, this restriction is to avoid confusion for Linn DS users, as BubbleDS is the most practical and simpler app to best control a Linn DS, with the zillions of irrelevant settings of BubbleUPnP not exposed, not having to choose between the UPnP AV and OpenHome renderer, and the OpenHome specific Radio tab.
All of this is largely the consequence of BubbleDS being released first a time long ago (at a time where the only OpenHome implementation was Linn DS), followed that BubbleUPnP that built on it. If it was made today, there would only be BubbleUPnP that can do it all.
Ironically, it has been a few years I do not have Linn DS hardware anymore, as the PSU of my Majik DS-I and Sekrit DS-I both died.

RE: The control app thread
I suppose I am one of the long term proponents of LUMIN control app, (free).
I have tried most of those available to use with my Linn streamer and Melco NAS.
I also do not want to use an app that requires a computer to be running in the background. My tablet is enough....

I have noticed over the years that Lumin's habit of not finding the network is a complaint that comes up occasionally.

Given that all networks, in my experience, misbehave from time to time, and normally have to be rebooted, I have found Lumin no worse than the others.

On my system Lumin never has any trouble finding my NAS and sometimes is a bit slow to find my streamer. Particularly if the app is left open and the tablet goes to sleep. Closing the app (sliding it off the screen), and reopening it, usually solves this.

I notes that the Lumin app has gone through three upgrades in recent weeks, all claiming to "improve device discovery".

I haven't noticed any real changes - the app continues to work fine.

But if you have found in the past that Lumin is not as responsive as you would have liked, perhaps give it another go now..

Cheers from cold, dark, downtown York, Donuk

I am finding that the Linn Kazoo app often hangs on my Windows 11 laptop (it is no longer being developed, of course). Has anyone discovered a decent alternative Windows control app?

I don't have Windows 11 but upplay works well on Windows 10, and is actively developed.
The UI could do with a little attention, but it supports OpenHome and is very compatible with MinimServer e.g. Disc Subtitles, Groups, PDF booklets e.t.c.

There is a small fee for the Windows version.

Hmmm.... I don't think it works with my setup. I have my music stored on a NAS and my renderer is a Linn Majik DC.

Are you saying that you've installed upplay and are experiencing problems?

I don't know much about the Majik, but if it's an OpenHome renderer and MinimServer is running on the same network then it should work.

My understanding is that Linn Kazoo is just a control point.

The issue is that Upplay does see things on a network if the internet connection is via a VPN. It works without the VPN running - but it does require a bit of work on the interface. It will be useful if Kazoo dies altogether.
