Question MinimWatch Desktop won't install on Linux Mint 22
Linux Mint 22: Wilma
Desktop Cinnamon v 6.2.9
MinimWatch 2.2 update 116

Hello: I've been able to install and run MinimWatch successfully from the command line, but it is a 'no go' to run MinimWatch from the desktop on my Linux Mint 22 computer. MinimWatch does not install properly to the desktop.

When I run the setup to install the MinimWatch desktop I get an error to the effect that the icon will not install, and, indeed, it does not. MinimWatch appears in the Applications Menu correctly, but clicking it seems to do nothing (although I think MinimWatch may actually start, but absent an icon there is nothing to take note of or to do.)

I am aware of the admonishment to "install the GNOME Shell extension TopIconsFix" but that, I understand, no longer applies to Linux Mint 22.

Is there a way to get the desktop installation of MinimWatch going on Linux 22?

Thanks.

RE: MinimWatch Desktop won't install on Linux Mint 22
To make the tray icon appear, you need to install openjdk-21-jdk as the default version of Java.

After I did this, MinimWatch showed tray icons for all running instances of MinimServer. However, there appears to be an issue with the positioning of the icon(s). To show the pop-up menu, I needed to right-click in the centre or left portion of the icon. If I clicked in the right portion of the icon, MinimWatch either exited (as if I had selected Exit from the pop-up menu) or displayed one or more status messages.

I didn't need to install TopIconsFix. This is only needed for some versions of GNOME Shell.

To make the tray icon appear, you need to install openjdk-21-jdk as the default version of Java.

It's there.
Code:
david@david-mint-24-09:~$ java -version
openjdk version "21.0.5" 2024-10-15
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 21.0.5+11-Ubuntu-1ubuntu124.04)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 21.0.5+11-Ubuntu-1ubuntu124.04, mixed mode, sharing)
david@david-mint-24-09:~$

I re-ran setup enabling desktop and autostart. (This was my third or fourth try.) I shut down the computer and re-started; upon restart the MimimWatch icon appeared in the panel. Confused

As you mentioned, it is finicky and, in addition, the font is very, very small (too small, in fact), but it is working and I can run rescans easily. Big Grin

Thank you for your reply.

RE: MinimWatch Desktop won't install on Linux Mint 22
I am not seeng any problem with the font size. I wonder if there is some configuration settng in your system that is causing this.

Also, I worked out why MinimServer exits when you click the right-hand side of the icon. The pop-up menu overlaps the icon and a click in this position is incorrectly passed through to the menu, where it happens to activate the Exit selection.

Wink RE: MinimWatch Desktop won't install on Linux Mint 22
Thanks for your reply.

The attachment, "MinimWatch.png," shows what MinimWatch displays in terms of font size on my computer. The attachment, "MinimWatch_larger_font_example.png," is typical of the size of the font displayed from other panel applets.

My setup is Linux Mint 22 which is running X11. I have two monitors: one is capable of 3840x2160 although it now set to 1920x1080. The second monitor is 1920x1080 native. This second monitor is where the MinimWatch applet is displayed in the panel. Both monitors have been scaled up by 125% from their 'base' 1920x1080 resolutions. My video card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660.

It has occurred to me that something in my setup may be causing this problem. If you see something obvious please let me know. That said, my MinimWatch installation is serviceable as it is, and for my case alone, please spend no development time. There are bigger fish to fry, I suppose, Wayland for instance.

Thanks again for your kind response. I started my MinimServer trial yesterday. I will be focusing on improving the tagging on my classical albums.

RE: MinimWatch Desktop won't install on Linux Mint 22
Thanks for posting these screenshots. I am seeing a larger font than you are seeing (see attached image). It seems that Java isn't adjusting the font size of the pop-up message for your display resolution settings. I am using a 1440 x 900 laptop screen with no scaling.

What is the issue with Wayland? The tray icon is working with Wayland on recent versions of Fedora and Ubuntu with GNOME Shell and the AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support extension enabled.

I have a similar problem on Linux Mint. Shall I start a new thread?
Perhaps a screenshot of the terminal in and output will help answering this question.

I also serve music to a Raspberry Pi 4 running the most recent version of Raspberry Pi OS. (My Linux Mint box and my Pi box are both client side. My installation of MinimServer is on a Synology NAS.) Your Raspberry Pi instructions say:

Quote:[NEW] Important: If you are running Raspberry Pi OS version 12 (bookworm), this uses Wayland as its display protocol by default instead of X11. MinimWatch requires X11 to show its tray icon. To configure Raspberry Pi OS to use X11 instead of Wayland, see the section Configuring Raspberry Pi OS to use X11 instead of Wayland.

That's where I picked up the Wayland issue. I held off installing MinimWatch on my Pi client because of that. It's good to hear that you've already got MinimWatch running on some Wayland computers. I figure Linux Mint is bound for Wayland sooner rather than later.

Thanks again for your kind attention.

This issue is not related to Linux Mint. The message means you have tried to start a second instance of MinimWatch (using startc) while another instance is already running. If you want to discuss this further, please start a new thread.
