It is a tribute to the flexibility and configurability of MinimServer that you and I could approach the task of implementing index artwork as it were from opposite directions and that both of us have achieved what we wanted.

Inspired by David’s setup I did add some pictures composer.jpg , albums.jpg , items.jpg and some others and am pleased with the result.
I hardly ever use the new Linn app, but since the top level menu is in grid view,I was curious about the looks, the results are nice.
The LUMIN app, however, crashes immediately after the latest changes.
It doesn’t crash when using my NAS ( I experiment using my PC using
a copy)
Has anyone experienced this behaviour?
Kazoo works fine but at top level the pictures show up rather small!

I in turn liked your Composer display. I am thinking about using bespoke images for "important" composers, so that I can distinguish them more easily from the album covers in the grid.

Interesting. But as the Linn app is still iOS only (why ever did Linn bother with it, instead of fixing Kazoo?). it is of no use to me.

Looks good but i prefer to set indexArtwork=folder so that only adds an image for an artist/composer if you have one in your indexArtwork folder, otherwise I think it is a bit confusing for album covers to be used at this level

It's very much a matter of individual preference. I have always tended to memorise the look of individual album covers (LP or CD), and in former times used the covers as signposts for browsing the physical media, so I find that, for my own use, album covers make good "icons" for composers. Others, including yourself, see things differently; there is no one "right" way of doing things. This is why, as we never tire of saying on this forum, it is good that MinimServer offers us so many options to do things in different ways, and repays a little configuration effort with a very pleasurable browsing experience.

I have Record Label set up as an index, and indexArtwork set to folder. One slight issue I noticed was that when browsing Record Label even though I had no images for record labels I was seeing images for a handful, this is because they shared a name with a band e.g BIS

So it would be good if you could (optionally) restrict images to serve a particular index, one idea would be under indexArtwork folder to allow a folder matching an index name to be specified, and then images for that index put there.

e.g

indexArtwork
indexArtwork/bis.jpg
indexArtwork/Label/bis.jpg

would mean that the first bis.jpg was available for al indexes (so could continue to serve multiple indexes e.g Artist/Album Artist) but would not be used for Label index, that would use the second bis.jpg

On Musicbrainz I can see that:
the label is BIS (all capital letters)
the artist is Bis or BiS
If written as they should Minimserver should be able to distinguish them, isn’t it?

I dont think so on Windows because filenames are case-insensitive, but anyway you still have the general problem when the names match

I think it would be good to have a solution for this. It is unlikely to affect most users, so it must be done in a way that has the smallest possible impact on performance in the normal case of no conflicts and no restricted images.

Image filenames are not read from the indexArtwork folder when the user is browsing by Artist, Label, etc. They are read from this folder during a rescan and cached in a table indexed by filename. This means that a restricted image needs to be distinguished from a shared image by something in its filename.

For example, a restricted image could contain the sequence $_ followed by the restricted index tag name. In your example, the filename for the BIS (record label) image would be:

indexArtwork/BIS$_Label.jpg

if the tag for record labels is named Label. Using a two-character sequence is much safer than a single character because any single character could possibly be used in a tag value.

I am using Index Artwork and agree that it is a fabulous enhancement. I too have clashes with artwork names, e.g. the artwork for the bands Leftfield and Electronic are showing up for the genres Leftfield and Electronic.
It would be great if we had a workaround for this.
