Hello Simon,

I experimented a bit with the new artwork-feature that MinimServer 2 introduced. It works very well and pointed to quite a few tagging mistakes that my library still has ;-)

Doing so I noticed that the artwork for artists whose names contain special characters which are not usable in filenames (for example " / ? : ) aren't recognised. Examples are "AC/CD" or "Therapy?". This is quite logic in the way the feature works, but is there a workaround?

I know that I can set the indexArtwork option to "all", but I would prefer having a complete set of artwork.

See this section for the solution. Although this only mentions artwork for albums, groups, discs and playlists, it applies to index artwork as well. I will make the necessary changes soon.

It sounds like @simoncn has you covered (was there ever any doubt), but just in case you wanted an alternative.

I didn't do it for artwork purposes, but mainly because I like my folder structure to represent the values from the tags so it can be part of various QA checks I run against my collection. With this in mind, I replaced the characters with unicode "equivalents" so they'd be suitable for file/folder names.

These are the ones I settled on:

U+002F / SLASH                 U+FF0F ／ FULLWIDTH SOLIDUS

U+003A : COLON                 U+FF1A ： FULLWIDTH COLON

U+003F ? QUESTION MARK         U+FF1F ？ FULLWIDTH QUESTION MARK

U+0022 " QUOTATION MARK        U+FF02 ＂ FULLWIDTH QUOTATION MARK

I tried Simons method and this works but in folderview AC/DC shows up as ACDC.

I must be doing something wrong.

I'm assuming you're pasting the code "U+????" into your tag editor, and not the literal itself (the fifth column)?
One problem with this approach is if you try to search for the string itself, as you won't find it with AC/DC. I had chosen unicode characters that were "compatible" (as classified by unicode) hoping that search functions would handle the translation, but BubbleUPnP/MinimServer doesn't.

Now that the album name doesn't have an illegal character (for file/folder names) in it, foobar can generate a matching folder structure.

It could be that your tag editor or control point doesn't have unicode support.

There are better matches visually (with some fonts U+2215 ∕ DIVISION SLASH looks much better) but I wanted my replacements to be officially compatible.

The attached picture shows what the different versions of slash look like.

Ok, I use dBpoweramp and Mp3tag, looks very different from Foobar.
I don’t know whether it is possible to use Unicode using these editors.
You say Foobar generates a matching folder structure, does this mean AC/DC is presented as AC/DC in folderview?

I've just tried it and it looks like Mp3tag supports unicode (see attached image, notice the path name at the top).

I've also included my BubbleUPnP folder view, one without a slash (as the ascii slash can't be used in folder names) and one with the unicode "equivalent".
