One more thought: as a "fair test", could you try the following:

Synology 918+ (without LPS) -> ethernet cable -> Cisco 2960 -> ethernet cable -> ethernet input Weiss DAC502.

Melco N1Zh/60 -> LAN port -> ethernet cable -> Cisco 2960 -> ethernet cable -> ethernet input Weiss DAC502.

In the second case, you can also try Melco N1ZH/60 -> player port -> ethernet cable -> Cisco 2960 -> ethernet cable -> ethernet input Weiss DAC502

I don't think this works because the Melco needs the LAN port to be connected so that it can communicate with the control point.

It works well, currently have mine connected this way Big Grin. As long as the Cisco is connected directly or indirectly to the control point

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Thanks for this. I have just tried it and I confirm that it does work. Have you noticed any difference in sound quality between connecting via the player port and the LAN port?

Edit: I have done a quick comparison. In my system, there is a difference in sound and I am getting better sound from the LAN port.

Thanks Simon, it’s definitely different, I think better. Need to try a few more varied tracks.

I just assumed the player port would be better given that’s the one recommended for the player, but it’s not connected to a player but to a lan so I guess maybe not.

So another free upgrade Big Grin

Isn’t it easy when bits are bits and any old switch or cable will do Tongue

Edit: after listening to a varied selection, I can say it’s definitely better - thanks Simon

Hello Simon,

I am demo-ing a Melco N1A. It has Minimserver 2 already installed. I'm trying to install MinimStreamer however, and having no luck.

When I go to 'about' in MinimWatch it shows no updates available. But when I go to packages it shows nothing to download.

To install and run MinimStreamer, you need to activate the free 30-day trial.

That fixed it thank you very much. BTW the N1A with SSD makes a lovely and noticeable change in my system. Bravo to Melco. I was a bit crestfallen with the S100 but this is a significant change.

I have yet to use the S100 in tandem with the N1A as I wanted a benchmark to my normal listening pattern. I wonder if the S100 might play nicer with the N1A in the system.

Note - I have been using the N1A as a 'dumb' NAS in my testing. If I were to connect my Lumin direct to the N1A (using the player out LAN) would the N1A be acting as a switch? or would it process any of the music before it reaches the Lumin? I'd prefer the former rather than the latter.

The player port is a switch only.

Hi, I am thinking of doing an SSD mod on my Melco N1Z/1. Which SSD's did you install? And how would you describe the process of removing the original HDD's and replacing them with SSD's? Any particular issues or things to look out for? Finally, how would you characterize the resulting change to the sound? Thanks in advance.

Melco HA-N1ZH60 Mk1 (MinimServer 2.2) → USB → Luxman D-07X Black Edition Centennial SACD Player/DAC → XLR → Mark Levinson No. 523 → RCA → JL Audio E-Sub e110 (active crossover @ 100 Hz) → RCA → Bryston 4B3 (Cubed) → Magnepan .7
