Many thanks for the PM.
May I ask you stupid questions? Will this Minimserver replace the Twonky server that already in N1? Any SQ improvement between Minimserver & Twonky ?
Regards,

MinimServer doesn't replace the Twonky server. Both servers can be active at the same time without any problems.

I will leave it to you to decide whether there is any difference in sound quality. Smile

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Hi

I am currently evaluating a Melco N1A server at home and would like to install MinimServer on to it. Please could I be sent installation instructions as well?

Many thanks

Steve

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
This is probably nothing to with the Minimserver installation, but I seem to be having problems backing my Melco up. I do have onebackup disk, a 1.5 TB, 2.5 usb powered job, that seems to work OK, but so far I've tried three other disks, all working fine on both Mac and PC, which either aren't recognised or get a short way through the backup befor reporting "error 033", an input/output error. I've tried formatting these disks on the Melco, the PC, and the Mac as FAT32, with no joy.

I'm really not comfortable having to rely on just one backup. Anyone else having issues?

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
When I have seen error 033, it has meant that the disk partition is full.

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Well, all the disks I've tried so far have been from 1.5 TB to 3 TB, freshly formatted on both a PC as NTFS, and on the Melco itself. I've only got 720 GB of music to back up, so it really doesn't figure.

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
This is a wild guess. Some USB drives might not be able to run (or run under stressful load) with the power available from the Melco's USB port. If so, the result could be a 033 error.

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Well, the strange thing is, the only disk that seems to allow full backup is USB powered only. The other HDs I've tried are all externally powered. As I say, it really doesn't make sense to me.

I'm currently "Backing up" by dragging a section of files from the Melco's network share across onto a Thunderbolt drive attached to my iMac. This is laborious because every now & then the process stops with a message that "you don't have permission to access some files". Doesn't tell me which ones, and if I go to the last successful files to transfer, and pick the next one down only, then it transfers fine.

Something else that is beyond weird - there are a couple of albums that only show on the bubble uPnP app. if I go into "All artists", and will play, but they don't show up on the file share on the iMac.

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Having copied all the music files onto a hard drive attached to my iMac, I'm now able to search the files, and discovered the missing ones nestled in the wrong files.

The Melco's the first such device I've used, prior to that I've been using iTunes on a Mac. Having populated the Melco with all my old music files (well, the ones I anticipate listening to again!) I discover that some can't be seen, and only appear in folder view, or sometimes only in artist view. There are also a few that only pop up in he Melco's own PnP library and not in the Minimserve. Now this is obviously something to do with tagging, something I've never bothered much with under iTunes. So the files are of various types - MP3s (very few), ALACs (a few more), AIFFs (probably the majority), and WAV, which I currently use for ripping via dBPoweramp. It seems to me I need to somehow re-tag the errant ones, so I was wondering how best to do this? I've downloaded a program called Jaikos, after seeing this mentioned in another thread. Presumably I can just drag files into this, and resave when properly tagged? Will this do the trick do you think?

All help and advice gratefully received!

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Have you looked at the MinimServer log? This will show you a list of problems that MinimServer has found with your files. These problems might be related to tagging or they might be related to the audio data in the file.

Any files that are untagged will show up under the [untagged] section of the MinimServer top-level index.

RE: Melco Audiophile NAS
Just had a look - there are hundreds of untagged files showing (although most seem to have the artwork). Looking at the miniserver log file, it's 35K long with lots of comments, most of which I'm afraid I don't understand.
