Don't quite understand DSM 6.0 ARM7 instructions
I'm trying to decide if it is safe to upgrade my NAS Synology DS214+ (ARM7) to DSM6.0. I only use two Packages: Minimserver and BubbleUPnP. I've therefore been reading the instructions without being able to see DSM 6.0 and probably being a bit thick too so there are some little things I don't quite understand.
It is the installing java bit that is making be unsure. References to a 'main menu' confuse because I don't know of anything that FOR ME fits that description. Do the instructions there mostly refer to the package center? Is it obvious where I get Synology java 8 from? Does the 'upgrade java button' 1. exist in the package center? 2. link to the download website? Thanks for any advice, I just like a clear picture of what I'm taking on *before* I commit to it. Cheers, Bob. |

RE: Don't quite understand DSM 6.0 ARM7 instructions
It's really very straightforward if you follow the instructions, I too have a DS214+ and from starting the installation of DSM 6 to completing the re-install of MinimServer probably only took 15mins.

RE: Don't quite understand DSM 6.0 ARM7 instructions
Thank you both very much for your time and help.
I realise I'm possibly crossing bridges before I get them but I can just imagine the grief I will get if I can't get Minimserver and bubbleUPnP up and running and no way back with Synology. I've just updated an old backup DS111 to DSM 6.0 and had a really good look for Synology Java 7 or 8 but I can't see any sign of ithem anywhere. So I looked at the release notes for DS111 and DS214+ and both are listed as having Synology Java 7/8. That doesn't do much for my confidence. I'm not yet confident I can do this. Bob. |

Everything is explained on this page if you read through all the information there. Where did you see release notes that say there are Synology Java7/Java8 packages for the DS111? |

Because that could explain a lot. Thanks for your patience I'll make another donation. Bob. |

(07-04-2016 08:26)mightyoakbob Wrote: https://www.synology.com/en-us/releaseNote/DS111 Yes, that is what I am saying. If you look at this page and click the icons for Java7 and Java8, you will see that the DS111 is not in the list of applied models. This is because Synology has chosen not to provide an officially supported Java package for ARMv5 models. It looks like the Release Notes page for the DS111 includes some generic information about Java7/8 that is incorrect in this context. I hadn't realised this and I now understand the reason for your earlier questions about this. Quote:Thanks for your patience I'll make another donation. Thanks very much! |

RE: Don't quite understand DSM 6.0 ARM7 instructions
I've had a go at the upgrade and it all seemed to go fine. Installed the Synology Java8 and updated it by pointing at the file on Oracle's site downloading it and installing it. I ever got an installed ok message. I then re-booted the NAS and installed the new Minimserver and again no worries. My problem is when I look at the installed packages there is no sign of the new Oracle Java8 only the penguin like Synology Java 8.
Confused again. Bob. |

If MinimServer is running successfully on an ARMv7 Synology NAS, this means that Oracle Java 8 has been installed. You can confirm this by looking for these lines (or similar) at the start of the MinimServer log: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_73-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.73-b02, mixed mode) |

RE: Don't quite understand DSM 6.0 ARM7 instructions
Well there are two lines very much like that with only a couple digits incremented and it does seem to play music ok so It looks we're there. I was just expecting another icon for the new Java especially as the 'penguin' still says it is Synology.
Once again, thanks for your help. Bob. |
