no Artist is shown if single artist in Genre
Hello
Maybe this has been addressed before, and should it be the case, apologies for asking again.
I'm running MinimServer (0.8.3) on a Qnap TS-212 and I have a Denon DNP-730AE as player. One thing I've noticed is the follwing:
in my Music Library I have a single artist with a single album in the "blues" genre. MinimServer shows the "genre" choice in the display of the player, but after the choice is selected, I only get the single album choice without any mention to the Artist. To my opinion it should show a single artist and a single album instead.
Now I know who the Artist is, so this is minor, but I am curious to understand if this can be corrected at settings level or not, or it might be related to my player.
Thanks a lot/Regards

All index choices for tags are only shown if selecting the tag would lead to more than one possible value choice for the tag. This is by design.

Thanks for the answer. I'm new here, and do not know who is who here, so when you say it is by design is it because you are part of the team who designed it? If so, I think there's room for a bit of improvement. If you are not part of that team then would you not think design should not lead to strange behavior such as this?

I am the designer and developer of MinimServer and I don't think this behaviour is strange. The Intelligent Browsing support in MinimServer is designed to show only those choices that are "useful" for refining the current selection. This reduces screen clutter from "useless" choices that would have no effect if they were selected.

all right Simon
I stll believe it is strange. If your concern is "useless" choices and clutter, then (in this case) ther's very little clutter. Correction (just for this instance) would add just one "useless" choice and will not make users concerned (as happened to me) about any possible wrong tagging.
However since you are the developer and designer, I fully respect your view and idea of the product and congratulate cause (apart from this small thing) I see it works pretty well.
ciao

I'd like to offer an alternative view, though again from a user perspective.

This is a case where absence of information is information in itself. The lists are not there to record the presence or absence of tagging as such; they are there to enable the user to make a choice. If I see that an option is not present, I know that that option is not available, and that is often useful to know.

Well, absence of information in this case tells you there is a single artist. But who is the artist? MinimServer in this case will not tell you, will just tell you there are Albums. Albums' names are not enough to tell you who the artist is. Now if you have in mind ALL of the Artists in your library, then you'd know that you have, say, a single Artist in "blues" and that Artist is "Deanna Bogart". But if you do not remember.....then you will get to know it is Deanna Bogart only after you play "blindly" the first song (at least on my mediaplayer).
I am one of those who will not be able to tell by mind how many CDs I own and the Artists. In this case i had forgotten i had bought a CD of this Artist, that i had ripped it to FLAc in my NAS and had tagged it under "blues".

But, again, this is minor and does not detract to the great opinion I have of MinimServer.

A good control point will provide a pop-up enabling you to view the metadata for the track or album. This will include the artist name along with other useful information. Which control point are you using?

Actually i am a little bit old fashioned in this. I use the remote of the player, this remote has an "info" key, but works only at track level, that means you have to play the first song.
Once the player starts playing then the info key gives you the Artist and the format.
