RE: Kinsky & Minimserver - some new user questions
Thanks Simon :-)

So I experimented a little bit. I have populated the Grouping Filed in iTunes of some songs with Style information from Discogs. I have also done this is Jaikoz (which also uses a Grouping field).

All these show up great in iTunes.

Now, how to get this to work in Minimserver? I have added several tags in the Minimserver properties Index Tags field:

Group
Grouping
Contentgroup
@grp (which is the tagname that iTunes seems to use?)

None of these work..... There does not show up an additional index in the main Minimserver window in Kinsky, and I am not able to find the Style info that I entered for any song.

What am I doing wrong? I have restarted Minimserver...

Cheers, Willem

As I mentioned in this post yesterday, MinimServer ignores the iTunes Grouping tag. Please read the referenced post for the background and reason for this.

RE: Kinsky & Minimserver - some new user questions
Hi there. I'm still exploring how best to group my music in Genres and Subgenres. You've informed me that Minimserver does not (currently?) support the iTunes Grouping field and have advised me to add another tag field to my music files and have Minimserver create an index for that.

So now I am looking how to do just this. I use Apple Losseless, stored in .m4a files.

I plan on creating an index "group" for that with "broad values" such as "Jazz", and use the Genre index for more detailed divisions. For example, music from Miles Davis will be indexed as part of the "Jazz" Group and have "Post-Bop" (or maybe "Jazz \\ Post-Bop") as Genre.

I use Jaikoz to tag my music. In Jaikoz there is the possibility to use a number of custom fields. There is this Jaikoz field "custom 1" that I plan to use for grouping purposes. From the Jaikoz developer I have learned that Jaikoz actually uses "a reverse dns atom:
----:com.apple.iTunes:CUSTOM1" to store information in the Jaikoz "custom 1" field.

So now I think that all I need to do know is have Minimserver create an index on this ----:com.apple.iTunes:CUSTOM1 field? Only thing is, I really have no clue how to do this....

From your User Guide I understand that I need to add another field in the Index Tags in Properties, but I'm not sure what info I should enter there.

Do I just enter Custom1? Or do I need to enter ----:com.apple.iTunes:CUSTOM1 (including the ----: at the beginning?)

Thanks again for helping me out :-)

Greetz, Willem

To index the ----:com.apple.iTunes:CUSTOM1 tag in MinimServer, you should enter Custom1 in indexTags. You can optionally rename the index entry for the Custom1 tag by entering Custom1:Grouping (for example).

In the next release of MinimServer, I'm planning to add support for some additional ID3v2 and iTunes tags. This includes iTunes Grouping, which will be mapped to CONTENTGROUP. This won't conflict with the existing MinimServer usage of the GROUP tag.

It seems the normal usage of iTunes Grouping is to represent a subgenre that is more specific than the Genre tag value. See for example this article. You're planning to do the opposite and add a new broader category than the Genre value. Both approaches should work with MinimServer, but you might want to consider adopting the more conventional approach of using Grouping for the subgenre.

RE: Kinsky & Minimserver - some new user questions
Introducing support for iTunes Grouping is good news ! Thanks already for that.

I read the article - it seems indeed best to take the approach where Genre is "broad" and use Grouping as a smaller Sub-Genre - I'll do that.
Does this mean that I can use iTunes for tagging the iTunes Grouping field and that this will show up in the next release of Minimserver?

Bytheway - I'm sure lots of people would like to know an estimate on when this next release will be out?

Thanks again, and greetz,
Willem

Yes, assuming that I can get this into the next release. (See below.)

It will be in the next few weeks. I'm working through a list of bug fixes and improvements (including the tag mapping changes discussed above).
