Thanks for your guidance: duly noted. If minimserver.config is not necessarily transferable between instances of MinimServer, its value as a backup vehicle is somewhat limited, because, as you imply yourself, the circumstances in which the backup would need to be restored are not predictable.

In those circumstances, I suppose the safest backup would be a simple text file, created by copying and pasting entries from the Properties window (labelled to remind the user what they were). It would probably not be necessary to copy all entries, only the more complex ones. The text file would then be stored as part of the user's normal backup set, with (ideally) off site copies for maximum security. Settings could then be restored by copying and pasting from the text file into the Properties window of the target version of MinimServer.

This is a pretty simple procedure for more capable users, and it would not need to be done very often. The down side is that it is the kind of job that IT-phobes may shy away from and others may not get around to doing.

The text file approach sounds good to me. I am thinking about ways to make it easier to create this file from the MinimServer/MinimWatch GUI.

That would be good, and would be close to what I had in mind (and have seen on other programs).

Not other music programs, it's true. But I am a long time user of a somewhat dated but still very functional image management program called BreezeBrowser. The File menu of this application has an 'export settings' option, and this opens a file save dialog which exports the program's Registry settings to a .reg file in the location of the user's choice. The corresponding 'import' function is not needed as double-clicking the .reg file does the import job automatically.

This is a Windows-only program, and the arrangement would clearly be unsuitable for MinimServer. But a similar arrangement to export a text file (rather than registry settings) to a location of the user's choice would make sense.

Thank you, Simon. I have seen that before. But as I tried to explain in the "Support for Simon" thread, this is miles away from what I would expect as a non technical user. swansatspree said he could "set this thing up in less than 10 minutes", but since that I have never heard of him. I think we were just not on the same page and I could (and can) not really explain what my points are. That's on one part because english is not my native language, but there are other reasons too (my limited understanding of that stuff, and I think we would need a combination of music server software and control app, and it's easier to say what I don't like than to say in detail how something should work ...).
