RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
How did you copy the files to the Melco? It is possible that the copying process has caused the '»' character to be encoded incorrectly.

RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
Hi Simon. I ripped the CDs to a folder/eleven sub-folders on an external hard drive and then, as I recall, I 'dragged' the master folder containing the eleven sub-folders to the Melco's "share" folder. This is how I copy all music files to the Melco. Thanks.

Was this on Windows or Mac? How did you do the ripping?

RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
Hi Simon. In the case of the "Get Shown the Light" 11-CD box set, the CDs were ripped using dBpoweramp v14.4 for Windows in May 2017. I do not recall if I dragged the master folder to the Melco via the same Windows PC or via my MacBook Pro.
A search for "»" in my MinimServer error log file revealed 772 hits. Assuming two hits per track, that means I have 386 tracks that I ripped and dragged to the Melco with "»" in the file name. I can say with confidence that such files were once visible on the Melco, e.g., with MinimServer 0.8. (As detailed in the original posts in this thread, such files used to show up in MinimServer folder view but not play. Now, they simply do not show up.) Thanks. RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
Hi again, Simon. FWIW, each file with a "»" in the file name would have a corresponding ">" in the tagged title field.
So "01 - Help On The Way ».flac" would look as follows in the title field: Help On The Way > It is possible that the file-tagging program, "mp3tag" auto-converted ">" to "»" in the file names (but not the title fields) when I performed post-ripping tag editing. Thanks. RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
I doubt that the change from MinimServer 0.8 to MinimServer 2 has caused this problem.
Do you remember which Melco firmware you were using when this was working for you on MinimServer 0.8? There have been changes in the 3.91 firmware related to the treatment of "PC-incompatible characters" (see the release notes for 3.91). If your previous firmware when this was working was earlier than 3.91, it might be the Melco firmware change that has caused this. There are two different ways the '»' character can be encoded in a filename. On Linux (as used by the Melco), it should be encoded as UTF-8 (0xc2 0xbb). On Windows, it is likely to be encoded as Windows-1252 (0xbb). If the filenames on your Melco have this character encoded as Windows-1252, this might be causing the problem. It is hard to be sure how the filenames are encoded on the Melco because the software used for copying and viewing these filenames can perform translation from one encoding to the other, so what you see when looking at the file in Windows Explorer or Mac Finder might not be the real truth. I have verified that a file on the Melco containing a '»' character encoded as UTF-8 is working correctly with the Melco 3.92 firmware and MinimServer 2. |

RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
Hi Simon, thanks for the detailed response and sorry for assuming that this is a MinimServer issue as opposed to a Melco issue. As best as I can recall, I updated to Melco FW version 3.91 shortly after it was released, and from Melco FW version 3.91 to 3.92 shortly after 3.92 was released. I do not recall when those Melco firmware updates occurred relative to when I updated from MS 0.8 to MS 2. All I am certain of is that I have numerous FLAC files that used to show up and play in MinimServer folder view that are no longer visible. One thing all those files have in common is a “≫” symbol in the file name. Is there any way I can get one of these files to you so you can test it? I am really hoping I do not have to rename my backups of these files — as many as 386 of them — and recopy them to the Melco. Thanks very much.
EDIT: After reviewing the Melco FW v3.91 release notes at your suggestion, I noticed a Melco GUI option to “Start checking all filenames and replace PC-incompatible characters for SMB file sharing.” Apparently, this menu option was added in v3.91. I never noticed it before and I have not yet run it. Should I do so now? Thanks. RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
This post from @BB1 about Melco FW v3.91 is interesting:
https://forum.minimserver.com/showthread...1#pid33301 @BB1, any thoughts on this situation? Thanks. RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
UPDATE: I went back to the original external hard drive where my "Get Shown the Light" CD rips are stored. I copied the folder containing CD11 via USB to my MacBook Pro desktop. I renamed the folder and then dragged it to my Melco "share" folder so that the folder and files would transfer via WiFi. Next, I used MinimWatch on my MacBook Pro to rescan the Melco share folder. The results are very interesting. Using Linn Kazoo for MacOS, I can see all seven FLAC files in the newly added test folder (see attached screen shot). However, the original 2017 file transfer of this folder still shows only the two FLAC files without the "≫" character in the file names (see attached screen shot).
I deduce from this that the original 2017 'drag and drop' was done from a Windows PC and that the "≫" characters were altered in a manner that does not happen when the 'drag and drop' is done from a Mac. This seems crazy to me, and I find it highly unlikely that the five FLAC files with "≫" in their file names have been invisible and inaccessible since 2017. The question remains as to whether I should run the Melco GUI option to "Start checking all filenames and replace PC-incompatible characters for SMB file sharing." Any insights would be greatly appreciated, thanks. RE: FLAC Files with the "≫" Character in File Name Won't Play
Below is the text of the original CD rip log file for CD11 of the "Get Shown the Light" box set. This log confirms that I used my Windows PC to rip and that the ripping program, dBpoweramp, substituted "≫" for ">" in the file names for tracks 01 to 05 (as I would not have known how to type "≫" and if I did, I would not have done so).
