RE: Two versions of MinimServer
OK...

1) MinimWatch running on your laptop can't see MinimServer on your PC
2) Kazoo running on PC can see and browse MinimServer on your PC
3) The Linn streamer can't play files from MinimServer on your PC
4) Kazoo running on PC can see and browse Kazoo Server, and the Linn can play the selections.

5) Kazoo running on my laptop cannot see MinimServer on my PC but can see and play music from Kazoo Server

The laptop is connected to the home networked PC via a wireless link.

Please provide more details about your network. I presume there is a router involved. Does this router provide the wireless link for your laptop? What is the make and model of this router? Is this router directly connected to the home networked PC via an Ethernet cable?

Also, what happens if you change the laptop connection to wired instead of wireless?

The network is wired and wireless. Laptops are wireless, but other PCs are wired - these also cannot see MinimServer on the music PC. The router is a BT Home Hub (in its latest manifestation). The router is connected to the music PC via an ethernet cable (via a switch).

What happens if you change the laptop connection to wired instead of wireless and leave everything else the same? Does this enable the laptop to browse the MinimServer library? Can you try this with the laptop plugged into the switch and also with the laptop plugged into the router?

I don't quite understand how your comment above "other PCs are wired - these also cannot see MinimServer on the music PC" relates to your previous comment "Kazoo running on PC can see and browse MinimServer on your PC". In the latter case, were both PCs the same machine?

RE: Two versions of MinimServer
A PC that is connected directly to the router cannot see MinimServer which is running on the music PC.

The only PC or laptop (wired or wireless) that can see MinimServer is the one on which it is actually running. MinimServer has a green icon in the sys tray on that PC, Kazoo can browse the music library, but the Linn will not play music when it is selected.

This problem has started only since I added a network storage unit which also has MinimServer running on it. Initially, everything seemed fine. However, this weekend, only the version of MinimServer running on the network storage unit can be seen. In order to isolate the problem, I disconnected the storage unit from the network early today...

These symptoms point to the problem being caused by external inbound connections to MinimServer on the music PC being blocked.

Do you have an antivirus program runnng on the music PC? This could cause the problem you are seeing.

Are you sure that the firewall is completely disabled on the music PC (not just disabled for "home network")?

Another possibility is that something in your router is blocking inbound connections to the music PC. You could eliminate this possibility by connecting both the Linn streamer and the music PC to your switch instead or your router.

With problems like this, a useful debugging technique is to reduce the setup to a bare minimum. This would be just your router, the Linn streamer and the music PC with all these connected by wired Ethernet.

RE: Two versions of MinimServer
Simon

I do ave anti-virus protection on the music PC - but the same package as has always been used (and I have tried suspending it).

Both the Linn and the music PC are connected to the same switch. The Linn can see and browse MinimServer, but cannot play any music that is selected.

Is there anything to be gained by a full reinstall - deleting all directories, etc.? (I have already reinstalled without deleting directories.)

Thank you for your help, by the way - much appreciated,

RE: Two versions of MinimServer
Deleting directories won't make any difference.

It is not the Linn that is browsing MinimServer. It is Kazoo (running on the music PC?) that is browsing MinimServer on the music PC.

I think the next step is to capture a trace log of the failing scenario. Please do the following:

1) From the minim icon on the music PC, select 'Show log'
2) In the log window, set the logging level to Trace
3) Leave the log window open
4) Use Kazoo to browse to an album and attempt to play it on the Linn streamer
5) After the Linn streamer has skipped all the tracks, click 'Save as' in the log window to save a log file
6) Zip the log file (this step is important) and attach the zipped log file to a post here
7) In the log window, set the logging level back to Info

I will look at the log file to see if there is anything unusual that might explain the problem.

RE: Two versions of MinimServer
Thanks for this. It shows that browsing is happening normally (including requests by control point to load artwork images) but no requests for playing were received.

Here is one of the image URLs that appars in the log (should all be a single line):

Code:
http://192.168.1.76:9790/minimserver/*/Music*20Library/Classical/Bach/Bach*20-*20Cello*20Suites*20Nos.*201,*204*20*26*205/14*20-*20Suite*20Nr.4*20(BWV*201010)*20Es-dur,*20Gigue.flac/$!picture-17169-429558.jpg

If you copy and paste this URL into a browser on another machine on the network and press Enter, the image should appear. If the browser cannot load the image, this means that something is blocking the browser request.

It might help if you power off all your equipment and power it on again in this order:

1) The router (then wait 5 minutes)
2) The switch
3) The music PC
4) The Linn streamer

Does this make any difference?
