Using folder-view makes all benefits MinimServer provides useless. I rarely use folder-view and changing it to on top is a bad idear in my opnion! Peter. |

RE: Folder View Only?
(31-10-2015 00:08)Peter StreamMagic Wrote: I really don not understand this.I could not find a way for tagging my collection in a way that really satisfies me. For example: In classical music the concept of an album is not very helpful in most cases. You have a complete work, often consisting of more than one single track (may be a string quartet consists of the movements Adagio, Andante, Largo and Allegro), but then you have works with several parts and each part has several tracks (like Handel's Messiah and works like that). The title, album and group tags do not fit well for this kind of music. And it's the same with the artist tag. The artist would be for the ensemble, for example Dunedin Consort, and at the same time it is for John Butt as the conductor, and it is for soprano Susan Hamilton (which is co-leader too), and for all the other soloists, and it is for all the musicians of the orchestra plus the respective instruments (so that I could search for violin or cello and make a difference between solo violin and violin as a member of an ensemble). But the musicians of the ensemble should not be the same as the soloists, of course (but when looking for a special artist I have to find him no matter if he acts as a soloist in one work and only as a member of the orchestra in another work). You can't do that with the current tagging system. I have to live with it. So I have organized my classical collection in a simple folder structure (composer / subgenre / work / ensemble) that just fits the basic needs and not more, because otherwise I would be frustrated every day. |

RE: Folder View Only?
In my case I have a problem with tagging because my music collection divides into two parts: One part is ripped from my CDs and all albums are cleanly tagged. Maybe I could work with tags if I only had this part.
But the second part are wildly copied tracks, unsorted, some tagged, others not, some tagged wrong or different. So navigating through the tags folder shows up much crap that I often do not want to see. A second problem is, that some albums of the same artist are tagged different, but I keep them in the same artist folder. One example is Prince. He occurs as "Prince", "Prince & The Revolution", "Prince & the new power generation", and many other names. I want these albums to show up together in one list, so I am using the folder view and do not have any problem. |

Not that it is an easy task to perform, before you know you end up with 100+ genres or 10+ entries. Nevertheless I think the Intelligent Browsing System MinimServer offers a fast and flexible way to search for whatever you want. On my NAS/PC I do have a small folder structure, just to have some overview. I recognize the "Prince Problem" . In these cases I use different tags for album artist and artist. Album artist would be tagged as "Prince & The Revolution"(as mentioned on the album) Artist would be tagged as "Prince"; "The Revolution" (if the Revolution is also performing as a separate band) or "Prince"; "Prince & The Revolution" (if the Revolution is only performing with Prince) If tagged this way you should find all "Prince"s albums without problems. Peter. |
