You can install Minimserver on the RaspberryPi which looks to the existing NAS via NFS or SMB for the files.

A Raspberry Pi with an attached USB drive is a great alternative to a NAS if your main use will be to run MinimServer. MinimServer 0.8.1 has excellent integration with the Raspberry Pi, and it should be easier to install MinimServer on a Raspberry Pi than it is on most NASs. There's no need to install Java because this is now included with Raspbian.

A NAS does many other things such as backup, RAID, etc., so you might want a NAS for other reasons. Also, the processor in the Raspberry Pi is less powerful than the processor in a NAS, and it might become heavily loaded when transcoding very high-resolution files.

I wouldn't recommend using SMB/CIFS to access files on a network share from MinimServer, as there are significant performance issues with this setup. I haven't tried doing this with NFS. There's no problem with a USB-attached drive.
