RE: [Tutorial] Installing MinimServer on FreeNAS or FreeBSD
Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to make another public service announcement.
I have provided the needed libraries, instructions and support for MinimServer under FreeBSD for several years. Main driver for the engagement was the existence of FreeNAS (later TrueNAS) as a common platform for home NAS-builds (leveraging ZFS etc). As a long-time user of that platform I wanted to have that functionality myself and was happy to help others aswell. The company behind TrueNAS however decided to move on from FreeBSD to Linux as their underlying OS (TrueNAS CORE --> TrueNAS SCALE). The product made quite a progress in the recent years. Main developer effort is going into the SCALE variant. The container-system in FreeBSD (called "jails" with iocage) is being replaced with docker, which is much more widely supported and offers a ton of already available images ready to use. While in the first releases of SCALE I had issues with its Kubernetes implementation of containers, it has now switched to docker and is much more stable and usable for me. Therefore, I have made the decision to move on aswell and switch to TrueNAS SCALE. I use MinimServer with the images provided by simoncn, and everything works fine for me. I encourage you to do the same! :-) This is why I will not provide any future version of ohNet-libraries for FreeBSD. |
