Yes, that's correct, and RPi2/Volumio connects to the Arcam by HDMI

Thanks for your further explanation of the processes at work. I'll post back when I've carried out the experiment, though as I implied earlier, the fact that I may not hear a difference doesn't necessarily mean there isn't one! I'll have to try again next time I have a visitor known to have sharp ears.
