It is fine to use ssh for this and it should be fine if the logged in user is a member of the administrators group.

If you need sudo to unpack the file, it sounds like you are trying to unpack the file to a disk location that requires root privilege to write files.

What is your current directory when you run the tar xf command? What permissions does this directory have? What error message do you get when you run tar xf without sudo?
