Could you look at the headers of the mp3 using an ASCII hexdump to see exactly what's being stored?

I've uses mp3tag for all my files for tagging.
In both cases ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4 TCMP.......1 had been written in the header. The same as seen in your attached image.

For all audio files only the tag "ARTIST" was used .
"ALBUMARTIST" is only present in the compilations and there it is always "Various Artists".
So far I have had no problems with this. What problems are to be expected?
In the case of collaborations with two or more artists, I have solved the problem by placing the "main artist" in the "ARTIST" tag and the other artist(s) in the "TITLE" tag as ".... (feat. xxx)".
