Any progress improving rescan & metadata rebuild speed on incremental library additions?

On minimserver v2.1 update 216 with startupscan = false, adding just one or two new directories (< 500MB of .flac files) and then 'rescan' will on occasion cause a rescan of my entire library of 2.7TB (> 178,000 files in ˜10,800 directories), lasting up to 30 minutes. Is that expected for a library of this size?
