The QNAP HS series is fanless. I have the HS-251+ very close to me (about 1 metre away) and I cannot hear any noise. I use 2 x Samsung/Seagate 2 GB 2.5 inch quiet HDDs in the HS-251+. I prefer 2.5 inch HDDs to 3.5 inch HDDs because they are quieter and use less power. The model I have (ST2000LM003) is no longer available but there are current 2 GB 2.5 inch models from Seagate and Toshiba.
You could use SSDs. These are faster than HDDs (not very important in a NAS) and silent. Prices of SSDs are coming down but they are still a lot more expensive than HDDs. |
