I don't know why you weren't able to enter the password on your next attempt at logging in. This might be related to the lock-up when you tried to copy the window text. To resolve this, you might need to restart the NAS.

Restart did not work but searching the web, I found that may others had the same problem - and the answer is that PuTTY completely blanks the password entry, but actually if you type the password, it is accepted anyway.
