Activating Group tag

Activating Group tag
Do you have to include the Group tag in the indexTags field in order for it to be active? I have not been doing so and my groups seem to be working -- the user manual implies that it is a special kind of tag so I wondered if it might be an exception to the normal need to put the tags you want to use in indexTags.
