The preinstalled Java should be OK. I have the MinimWatch GUI running successfully on Ubuntu 12.04, and I don't think I reinstalled Java.

Please try the following:

1) Open a Terminal window

2) Change directory to the /data subdirectory of your MinimWatch installation

3) Type the command
java -jar ../lib/minimwatch.jar --debug

You'll see a lot of debug messages. Somewhere in there, you should see the following:

TrayView: creating tray icon
TrayView: classloader is org.jminim.core.ComponentClassLoader@xxxxxxx
TrayView: created tray icon

Do you see this output, or is there an error message instead of "TrayView: created tray icon"?
