You should put the semicolons as prefixes, not suffixes. Try the following:

Artist.displayFormat={$artist^^$composer^; ^ (composer)$soloists^; ^ (soloist)$orchestra^; ^$conductor^; ^ (conductor)}

This should do what you want as long as there is at least one artist. It also handles multiple orchestras and conductors (I have an album like this).
